Projekt „The Smile” to kolejna odsłona badań nad tulipanowcem amerykańskim klejonym warstwowo, a przy okazji także przykład użycia drewna do celów konstrukcyjnych. Wykorzystując właściwości strukturalne tulipanowca amerykańskiego, Alison Brooks postanowiła zaprojektować rodzaj tunelu wygiętego na obu końcach i wytrzymałego tak, jak tunele wykonane ze stali.

This project set out to test American tulipwood CLT and showcase it in a series of construction products. Exploiting the properties of tulipwood CLT, Architect Alison Brooks came up with the concept of a beam that curves up at both ends. The CLT tube is an inherently strong shape, in the same way that a steel tube is. The curve means that it cantilevers from, effectively, a single point in the centre.

Im Rahmen dieses Projekts sollte BSP aus American tulipwood (Tulpenbaum) getestet werden und in einer Reihe von Baustoffprodukten präsentiert werden. Die Architektin Alison Brooks nutzte die Eigenschaften von BSP aus American tulipwood (Tulpenbaum) und entwickelte ein Konzept nach dem Bild eines Balkens, der sich in der Mitte durchbiegt. Die Röhre aus BSP ist ein in sich festes Konstrukt, so wie ein Stahlrohr. Von einem Punkt in der Mitte der Röhre aus biegen sich die beiden Seiten nach oben.

Este proyecto pretendía poner a prueba la madera laminada transversalmente de tulipwood estadounidense y exhibirla en una serie de productos de construcción. Aprovechando las propiedades de la madera laminada transversalmente de tulipwood, la arquitecta Alison Brooks ideó el concepto de una viga que se curva hacia arriba en ambos extremos. El tubo de madera laminada transversalmente es una forma intrínsecamente fuerte, como lo es la de un tubo de acero. La curva se obtiene formando un voladizo desde un único punto en el centro.

Questo progetto nacque per testare l’applicazione dell’American tulipwood lamellare a strati incrociati (CLT) in una serie di prodotti da costruzione. Al momento di studiare le proprietà del tuliper CLT, l’architetto Alison Brooks ebbe l’idea di una struttura a forma di trave curvata a entrambe le estremità, che ricorda la forma di un sorriso. La struttura ha una resistenza equivalente a quella di un tubo di acciaio, con una forma che si sviluppa verso l’esterno a partire da un unico punto centrale.
