Jej cechą charakterystyczną jest bowiem bardzo rozbudowany opis, bazujący na specjalnych systemach numeracji przodków, potomków i pokrewieństw. Podobnie jak inne rodzaje informacji z kolei, informacja genealogiczna bywa różnorodnie prezentowana. Potwierdzenie tej tezy przynosi szereg inicjatyw genealogicznych realizowanych w środowisku sieciowym: stron WWW instytucji zajmujących się genealogią, serwisów poświęconych poszukiwaniom rodzin, baz danych specjalizujących się w przechowywaniu i udostępnianiu danych genealogicznych, a wreszcie specjalistycznych portali społecznościowych umożliwiających tworzenie własnych drzew genealogicznych.
