Codi pac - mae'n rhaid bod rhesymau da gan y Cymry dros ymfudo i America, ac mae'r stori hon yn esbonio rhai o'r rhesymau hynny
Uprooting - The Welsh must have had good reasons for emigrating to America; this story explains some of those reasons

Nid oedd hi'n fwriad ganddo i ymgartrefu yn America ac yn 1887, yn dilyn marwolaeth ei chwaer Mary, dychwelodd i gynorthwyo'i dad yn ei siop lyfrau ar Y Stryd Fawr yn Aberystwyth. Bu farw ei dad yn 1897 gan adael Jack i redeg y busnes.
Jack never intended to stay in America, and in 1887, after the death of his sister Mary, he returned home to work with his father as a bookseller's assistant in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth. His father died in 1897, leaving Jack to take over the business.

Roedd gan Jack ddiddordeb mawr mewn materion lleol ac roedd yn gefnogwr brwd o'r syniad o ddatblygu Aberystwyth fel prif dref lan y môr arfordir Cymru. Datblygodd ddiddordeb mewn Esperanto hefyd a daeth yn rhugl ynddi ar ôl mynychu cynadleddau rhyngwladol.
He had a great 'interest in local affairs', and was a strong supporter of the development of Aberystwyth as the 'premier resort on the Welsh coast'. He also developed a great interest in the Esperanto language, becoming fluent and attending international conferences.
  Sir Van Wert, Ohio
Sir go wyllt oedd Van Wert yn ystod y cyfnod cynnar hwn. Roedd rhannau helaeth ohoni yn dir coediog ac nid oedd llwybrau na ffyrdd yno ond er gwaethaf hynny, roedd y Cymry'n barod i fentro a phrynu tir yn Sir Van Wert.
Van Wert County was quite untamed at this early period. Large parts of it were covered in woods and there were no paths or roads, but despite that, the Welsh were ready to brave the difficulties and buy land in Van Wert County.

Y digwyddiad a newidiodd fywydau'r teulu'n llwyr ac a drodd y wlad gyfan wyneb i waered wrth gwrs oedd Rhyfel Cartref yr Unol Daleithiau. Ceir cofnod o'r anhrefn, y tywallt gwaed, a'r dioddef a chyfeirir yn y llythyrau at frwydrau megis brwydr Port Gibson, brwydr Champion Hill a
The event which changed the family's life completely and which turned the country upside down was, of course, the American Civil War. The letters refer to the chaos, the bloodshed, and the suffering, and mentions battles such as the Battle of Port Gibson, the Battle of Champion Hill and

Roedd yn derbyn cysur hefyd o'r papurau newydd a'r llyfrau a anfonid ato o Gymru ac mae sawl llythyr yn cynnwys sylwadau ar erthyglau ynddynt.
Another source of comfort were the supply of newspapers and books from Wales, and several letters contain comments on articles read in them.
  Ymfudo: adysgrif stori ...
Doedd dim pwrpas i neb fynd â'i ddillad gorau ar y llong, wedi'r cyfan doedd dim modd eu golchi na'u sychu'n hawdd ac erbyn cyrraedd pen y daith, fe fyddai tar a baw arnyn nhw ac fe fyddai halen y môr wedi dechrau eu difetha.
No-one needed to wear their best clothes on the ship, after all there was no means of washing or drying them easily and by the time they reached the end of the journey, they would be filthy with mud and tar and salt from the sea would have started to ruin them.

Roedd crefydd yn rhan ganolog o fywydau llawer o'r Cymry a aeth drosodd i America ac mae'n rhaid eu bod nhw'n hiraethu'n fawr am gael addoli yn Gymraeg oherwydd yn fuan ar ôl cyrraedd aethon nhw ati i gynnal gwasanaethau crefyddol ffurfiol yn eu mamiaith a sefydlu capeli.
Religion was central to the lives of many of the Welsh who went to America and they must have felt a great longing to be able to worship in Welsh, because soon after arriving they set about holding formal religious services in their mother tongue and establishing churches.
