Visitors to two of the Acis, Aci Trezza and Aci Castello, will notice a group of large rocks emerging from the sea, testimony to another of Polyphemus’ apoplectic outbursts of violence: “Rage rose up in him at my (Odysseus) words. He wrenched away the top of a towering crag and hurled it in front of our dark-prowed ship. The sea surged up as the rock fell into it; the swell from beyond came washing back at once and the wave carried the ship landwards and drove it towards the strand.”

Dieser Auszug aus der Metamorphose von Ovid ist ein guter Ansatzpunkt zur Entdeckung wie viel griechische Mythologie sich auf Sizilien abspielt. Dieser Auszug stammt aus der Geschichte von Acis (einem sterblichen Jugendlichen) und Galateia (einer Nereider Nymphe), deren Liebe den am Fuße des Ätna lebenden Polyphem erzürnte, so dass er Acis tötete. Galateia verwandelte ihren Liebhaber aus Mitleid in einen tosenden Fluss, der vom Vulkan aus bis ins Ionische Meer floss, wo sich das Liebespaar für immer vereinen konnte. Der heutige Fluss Aci scheidet sich mehrfach, bevor er an seinem Bestimmungsort ankommt und die Städte, die sich an diesen Flussarmen befinden, heißen Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, Acireale, Aci Catena, Aci San Antonio und Aci Bonaccorsi.
