  Hi
I also have done one cooking class. Basically making Indonesian Mie Goreng (Fried Noodles) and Pastel Goreng (snack) at the Aoi Hall with few Japanese housewives. Only one of them ever had Indonesian food before.

The Tokugawa family crest (which can be seen throughout Okazaki and on any of the major Tokugawa monuments such as Nijo Castle in Kyoto or Takisanji Toshogu) consists of three Aoi (Hollyhock) leaves. The Aoi leaves are one of the most distinctive symbols in Japan and the major reason we named our new extension center Aoi Hall.

Please note that only the faculty members involved in Academic Program delivery are based here - all teachers involved in Extension programs, Online & Distance programs and off-campus programs are usually based in Aoi Hall or elsewhere.

On the second floor of Aoi Hall there is a large room (more than 110 square meters/ 1190 square feet) located at the eastern end of the building. Since it is directly adjoining the corridor leading to the classrooms, this room serves as the main lounge for students in the SILAC and other Extension programs.

Known as one of the 3 big festivals in Japan, the Gion Festival is a spectacular event held at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Many vistors go to Kyoto annually just to attend this famous festival. Together with the Aoi Festival, the Gion festival are the two of the most famous festivals in Kyoto.

Also close to the school and on Route 248 is Yellow Cab. Up fron the Aoi Bookstore corner in the direction of Minami Koen but on the other side of the road. Set back and with an image of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh painted on the side wall, you can't miss this place.

There are four common room areas that students can use on campus. These include the TV Lounge and Main Hall in Aoi Hall, and the Coffee Room in the Yamasa II building.

The fourth room is the tatami mat room in Sakura House. The room is accessed from the courtyard side of the building at the end of the covered walkway joining Aoi Hall with Sakura House.

Please come to the International Office in Aoi Hall for more information on ski equipment hire prices and to make reservations/payments. Places are limited for all dates and are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so make sure you book early!

The main advantages of having the coffee shop on-campus are that if you want to have a coffee while you study you don't have to go far away, and its useful on rainy days - especially since the path leading from the main entrance to Aoi Hall to the coffee shop is a covered walkway.

The facilities at Yamasa continue to improve as we welcome the completion of the new radio studio in Aoi Hall and the arrival of FM Okazaki (more on that next week). Also starting this week is the long awaited renovation of the old Hattori Industries bath-house adjoining Sakura House, next to Aoi Hall.

As was also mentioned in the last issue, we will be streaming the programming over the internet from summer as extra support for the (also soon to launch) Online Center for Japanese Studies.
