When I talked about this, I primarily was referring to the fact that reaching gender equality and the empowerment of women is a kind of marathon.. It is a long-term goal. Therefore, those who work in this area must be committed; they have to be persistent, tolerant, patient, to work constantly for achieving this goal. And today I can see certain steps that have been made in order to reach this level in the Republic of Moldova. Take as example the projects on a positive deviation, which are implemented by five non-governmental organizations, whose reports we have heard today. The rights and power of these women, who today presented intermediate results, were also enhanced by UN Women. Once suffering from violence and discrimination, they have received real support and empowerment and further continue to support other women who are generally perceived as victims. I can also refer to the new legislation on quotas, as well as in the context of domestic violence. Of course, not only UN Women contributed to all these achievements, but our organization has made a significant contribution to this great and important work. These were just a few examples that allow you to see some progress in your country in recent years.

Before the award ceremony, we spoke with Alla Yatsko, president of organization “Youth for the Right to Life” in Balti. “Historically, the number of HIV positive people in Balti is much higher than in other regions. Officially, we have about 1 500 HIV-positive, but unofficially there may be even twice more. That’s why we are very happy that our organization and many others were invited to today’s event. This award motivates people who spend huge amount of time for the fight against HIV every day. For example, we recently developed and implemented social theater. In 10 years the attitude changed not only toward disease, but also toward patients. Firstly, treatment in now available and HIV / AIDS is no longer a deadly disease, but chronic one. This means that people with such a diagnosis can live a normal life for many years. The attitude toward patients has changed. More and more people began to understand that HIV -positive – is not necessarily a person living an immoral lifestyle. There are more brave people who are not afraid to show their faces and argue that HIV infection is not a stigma leaving disfiguring scars on the body. They are not different from us. Like everyone, they want to live, work, help the society, love, have children and just be happy. But myths about AIDS are deeply ingrained in people’s minds, so unfortunately, it’s very difficult to eradicate them and therefore, even today stigma and discrimination are still a common thing. Even if we know that HIV is not transmitted by using the same bathroom, while shaking hands or kissing, many people still do not want to study, work, or even having their holidays close to people living with HIV.
