At the proposal of the director of the Museum of Ethnography, Academician Franz Schiefner, and the director of the Museum of Anthropology, Academician Karl von Baer, the Russian Academy of Sciences adopts a decision to merge the two museums establishing the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.

Auf Vorschlag des Direktors des Ethnographischen Museums Akademiker F. A. Schiefner und des Direktors des Anthropologischen Museums Akademiker K. E. von Baer trifft die Akademie der Wissenschaften die Entscheidung, „statt zwei existierender Museen, des Anthropologischen und des Ethnographischen, ein einheitliches Museum bei der Akademie zu gründen — das Museum für Anthropologie und Ethnographie“. Dieses Museum sollte das ganze Datenmaterial der Anthropologie, Archäologie und Ethnographie über die Abstammung des Menschen und über seine Kultur unter ein Dach bringen.

Academician Karl von Baer became the head of the Cabinet of Anatomy; he laid the foundations of the anthropology (osteology) collections of the Kunstkammer. At present, these collections, which currently contain 15,000 skeletons, discovered primarily during archaeological excavations in European and Asian Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus, are kept by the Anthropology Department of the Kunstkammer; since the summer of 1995, this department occupies a separate building at 24 Sredny Avenue (the Vasilievsky Island).

Zum Leiter des Anatomischen Kabinetts wurde Akademiker K. E. von Baer ernannt, der den anthropologischen (osteologischen) Sammlungen der Kunstkammer den Anfang legte. Heutzutage zählen die Sammlungen etwa 15 000 Knochengerüste, die hauptsächlich bei den archäologischen Ausgrabungen im europäischen und asiatischen Teil Russlands, im Mittelasien und Kaukasus gefunden worden sind, und werden zur Zeit in der anthropologischen Abteilung des Museums, ab Sommer 1995 in einem abgesonderten Gebäude (Wassiljewski-Insel, Sredni Prospekt, 24) aufbewahrt.
