Fließgewässersysteme sind vielfältigen natürlichen und menschlichen Stressoren ausgesetzt, wie Veränderungen im Wasserhaushalt, Flussregulierungen, Stoffeinträgen aus dem Umland und Klimaveränderungen. BIGER untersucht die Auswirkungen dieser Stressoren auf die biogeochemischen Prozesse im Wasser und im Sedimentkörper von Bächen, Flüssen und Auen und deren Biodiversität.

Riverine systems are exposed to multiple natural and anthropogenic stressors, such as changes in the hydrological regime, river regulations, nutrients and organic matter inputs from the catchment, and climate change. BIGER studies the interactive effects of these stressors on the biogeochemical processes at the water-sediment-interface of streams, rivers, and floodplains as well as on their biodiversity. Our research focus lies on the resilience and resistance of these aquatic ecosystems to both, human impacts and restoration measures, and on the development of perspectives for a sustainable use and, thus, an improved ecological state of these systems.

Die Arbeitsgruppe AQUASCALE ist spezialisiert auf experimentelle Planktonökologie und Diversitätsforschung. Nachhaltiges Management von Flusslandschaften und Feuchtgebieten steht im Zentrum der Arbeit der Arbeitsgruppe BIGER.

Five working groups. In our research center the teams of five working groups work together. Working group AQUASCALE focuses on experimental plankton ecology and biodiversity research. Whereas sustainable management of floodplains is a main interrest of BIGER. The ecology of running waters is a main research topic of ECOCATCH, aquatic food chains is in the focus of the working group LIPTOX and the focus of the working group QUIVER is on diversity of aquatic insects.
