A spring night, I walked past the invisible. I wonder if it was a cat or an office worker. Or might it be a wind I felt in a slumber? They were certainly there, celebrating the cycle of lives in small ways.

A distinguished sculptor Mr Peacock laid an egg. Thrilled with himself and his work of art, he made it widely known. Friends arrived soon. “What a beautiful egg… the only thing missing is the horns!” said Mrs Cow. “And a beak!” said Mr Duck. “And ears,” added Mr Donkey. So they supplied the egg with all what was missing. So did other friends, each to their taste. In a mere moment the egg was covered in a pyramid of strange objects. Everyone was thrilled, Mr Peacock in particular, as his fame grew. The only one hurt was the egg. Under the great weight – it broke.

Once upon a time there were seven brothers who wandered through the streets of their village, looking for inspiration for fairy tales. The ideas they came up with, however, didn't look much like the traditional fairy tales we are used to. At home, the brothers wrote their stories down, unaware of their shortcomings. But then they heard their last tale being acted out next door, quite differently from the way they had written it. The brother's wanderings are shown in live action; the fairy tales are animated.

When we were kids, The Yellow Submarine was our absolute favourite among the Beatles’ songs. Later I realised there was a feature animated film of the same name, but at that time I preferred some other songs. And The Beatles fell apart, and in 1971 I “discovered” Pink Floyd. It was said that the Yellow Submarine (1968) was both commercial and revolutionary, but I do not remember ever seeing it in Croatian theatres. It cannot be found on video or DVD as well. The same goes for two other films in this year’s Animafest special programme, but Heavy Metal and The Wall at their time attracted huge audiences.

"Taratata is a tribute to the parades that used to be held on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Quebec's national holiday. These parades were an occasion to honour traditional values or demonstrate progress by way of allegorical floats. Presented each year on June 24 in cities and towns all over Quebec, they gave local musicians and brass bands a chance to display their talents. Children adored the pageant with its splendid uniforms. The day would end with a great fireworks display. I wanted to evoke this popular celebration once again, emphasizing what was charming, ridiculous or pretentious." Frédéric Back

In the 1990s, young filmmakers Simon Bogojević Narath, Daniel Šuljić, Veljko Popović, Marko Meštrović, Michaela Müller, Marko Tadić and others followed in their footsteps. The festival direction has traditionally been trusted to world-acclaimed Croatian animators, which is a unique practice making sure that art and its requirements always come first.

Kyung-min, a bankrupt businessman, and journalist Jong-suk were once classmates in middle school. They reunite 15 years later and talk about their school days, in which the rich and powerful students were called 'dogs' and the poor ones 'pigs'. This clear social distinction created an atmosphere that allowed for the privileged to abuse the less fortunate. The hierarchies and systematic humiliations are questioned by no one, and condoned by the school's teachers – at least until the arrival of Chul, who takes on the dogs with clarity of purpose and brutality not seen before in the school. A daring, disturbing and violent animated film about bullying, social status and class difference.

The staging of the exhibition – a rocket in a tower, the tower around the rocket – depicts a combination of two significant achievements of our national animation: Cow on the Moon and The Play. The concept of the exhibition portrays the author’s driving force, inviting the visitors to take a sneak peek into a model of a naive, children’s, almost life-size rocket, while in fact revealing the secrets of a long-lost mind, eternalised by the legacy exhibited through toys, books, tiny details symptomatic of the author’s personal fascination that laid the foundations of the celebrated work.

Born in Stirling, Scotland, in 1914, Norman McLaren, the founder of the NFB’s animation studio, succeeded in giving Canadian animation a vision and direction that still endure today, long after he was hired by John Grierson in 1941. McLaren refused to accept the simple narrative that claimed cinema had been invented by the Lumière brothers in 1895; he was of the opinion that the art form had yet to fully come into its own, and that research and experimentation were the natural ingredients of artistic creation. He thus emerged as a pioneer of countless techniques that have become hallmarks of animation: drawing and engraving on film, cross-dissolves, pixillation, synthesized sound, and many others. Pre-existing methods and formulas had no place in his approach. Uncommon boldness and originality were the creative sources for all his work.

Animated Minds was conceived in 2003 as an attempt to communicate the subjective experience of mental health problems to a wider audience. The idea was simple: to take the testimony of a variety of people who have experienced mental distress, and then to try to animate their experience. The result, it was hoped, would be a series of engaging short films which would give a general audience a greater understanding of what it feels like to live with various mental difficulties. The process of making the Animated Minds was as collaborative as possible. Andy Glynne, the director, trained as a clinical psychologist and therefore knew about mental health and some of the myths and prejudices that surrounded various “conditions”. After having identified individuals who wanted to talk about their experiences, Andy recorded interviews with them, which were then edited down to create a short narrative rich in visual metaphors. Once it was made sure that no information was included which might cause any distress to the people involved, the process of animation began. Working with some of the best animators, Andy tried to create visual sequences which would add depth and meaning to the audio interview. The reception to the films was far greater than expected. Not only did they reach a large audience through various broadcast partners (Channel 4, Teachers TV), but they have also been used by teaching hospitals, schools, universities, mental health community centres, mental health charities, and by service users themselves, who would use the films to try to show others what their experience was like. These animated documentaries received many international awards as well, such as Best Educational Film at Holland Animation Film Festival 2009; Young People's Media, Mental Health Media Awards 2009; Secondary Learning, BAFTA Children's Awards 2009.
