En este sentido, la transformación del Instituto Universitario de Geografía de la Universidad de Alicante, creado por Orden Ministerial de 15 de noviembre de 1982 (BOE de 12 de enero de 1983), en Instituto Interuniversitario de Geografía (IIG), con la incorporación del Laboratorio de Clima de la Universitat Jaume I de Castellón, mediante Decreto 116/2009, de 31 de julio del Consell de la Generalitat Valenciana (DOCV de 4 de agosto de 2009), constituye, en el horizonte indicado, una evolución natural de ambos Centros, que unieron así sus esfuerzos, medios y personal en uno solo, con la finalidad de afianzar y ampliar sus líneas de investigación.

The current scenario, with the launch of the European Higher Education Area, provides and raises the need for university research groups to establish stable cooperative ties. In this sense, the transformation of the University of Alicante Institute of Geography, created by Ministerial Order of 15 November 1982 (BOE of 12 January 1983), into Interuniversity Institute of Geography (IIG), with the addition of the Climate Laboratory of the Universitat Jaume I, by Decree 116/2009, of 31 July, by the Valencian Government Council (DOCV of 4 August 2009), is the natural evolution of both centres which joined their efforts, resources and staff into one, in order to strengthen and expand their research activity. Thus, the Interuniversity Institute of Geography, belonging to the Universities of Alicante and Jaume I, has offices in both institutions.

L'escenari actual, amb la implantació de l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior, contempla i planteja la necessitat que els grups de recerca universitaris formalitzen llaços estables de cooperació. En aquest sentit, la transformació de l'Institut Universitari de Geografia de la Universitat d'Alacant, creat per Ordre Ministerial de 15 de novembre de 1982 (BOE de 12 de gener de 1983), en Institut Interuniversitari de Geografia (IIG), amb la incorporació del Laboratori de Clima de la Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, mitjançant Decret 116/2009, de 31 de juliol del Consell de la Generalitat Valenciana (DOCV de 4 d'agost de 2009), constitueix, en l'horitzó indicat, una evolució natural de tots dos Centres, que van unir així els seus esforços, mitjans i personal en un solament, amb la finalitat d'afermar i ampliar les seues línies de recerca. Així doncs, l'Institut Interuniversitari de Geografia, integrat per les Universitats d'Alacant i Jaume I de Castelló, té seus en tots dos organismes.
