"Credaf fod cymysgu chwaraeon a'r celfyddydau yn syniad cyffrous ac rwyf yn caru rygbi'n angerddol. Mae Owen yn fardd ac awdur arobryn a cheir pobl sy'n edmygu ei waith ym mhedwar ban byd. Mae'n llawn egni ac yn creu arweinydd ym myd y celfyddydau. Rwy’n siŵr y bydd ei ysbryd creadigol yn ffynnu ac agor ein meddyliau i bosibiliadau y tu hwnt i'r cae rygbi."
"I think mixing art and sport is a stimulating proposition, and the art of rugby is something that I’m personally very passionate about. Owen is an award-winning poet and novelist, an exciting talent whose work is known and followed around the world. He’s a real live-wire, and a mover-and-shaker on the arts scene, to boot. I’m positive that his creative spirit will thrive and will open our minds to possibilities beyond the rugby field."

Mae’r sioe gerdd glasurol gan Cole Porter Kiss Me, Kate yn parhau â’r thema, yn seiliedig ar ddrama Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew a cheir sioeau gwych eraill hefyd fel Too Darn Hot, Wunderbar, Another Op’nin’ Another Show a Brush up Your Shakespeare.
Continuing the theme is the classic musical, Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate based on Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew and full of showstoppers including Too Darn Hot, Wunderbar, Another Op’nin’ Another Show and Brush up Your Shakespeare. Kiss Me, Kate is directed by Jo Davies, a specialist in musical theatre and opera. The British première of The Merchant of Venice by André Tchaikowsky, directed by Keith Warner completes the season. Composed by a Polish-Jewish genius, who survived the Holocaust hiding in a wardrobe in a gentile district of Warsaw, Tchaikowsky’s The Merchant of Venice is a powerful and serious attack on prejudice but also contains moments of tender beauty. The opera premieres in the UK, following performances at the Bregenz Festival in Austria originally commissioned by David Pountney. David Pountney said

Eglurodd David Pountney, Cyfarwyddwr Artistig Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, "Mae ein tymor 16/17 yn amrywio o wleidyddiaeth arw a hiwmor cyfrwys Shakespeare i’r camymddwyn amlwg mewn ystafelloedd gwely yn Fenis, drwy ailgyflwyniad rhagorol o ramant drychinebus Tristan ac Isolde. Edrychaf ymlaen yn arw at glywed araith "The quality of mercy" gan Portia wedi ei gosod i gerddoriaeth, ac felly hefyd y triawd o leisiau merched godidog a arweinir gan Rebecca Evans, a cheir blwyddyn gron o operâu bendigedig rhwng hynny!"
David Pountney, Artistic Director of Welsh National Opera explained, "Our 16/17 season ranges from Shakespeare’s tough politics and wicked humour to the opulent naughtiness of Viennese bedrooms, via a truly exquisite re-telling of Tristan and Isolde’s doomed romance. I can’t wait to hear Portia’s "The quality of mercy" speech set to music, nor the most ravishing trio of female voices lead by Rebecca Evans, but a whole year of glorious opera lies in between!"

Dywedodd y panelwr, Julie Weir, Sony Music, "Does unman yn debyg i Gymru … ei phobl, ei thirwedd a’i diwylliant - mae yma gynhesrwydd na cheir mohono yn yr yn genedl arall. Ac mae panel Gorwelion hwythau’n griw gwych ac amrywiol o unigolion gwybodus o bob pegwn o’r diwydiannau cerddorol a chreadigol, sy’n cynnig golwg gyffredinol dreiddgar ar bob elfen o yrfa’r artist. Roedd safon y ceisiadau o bob cwr o’r wlad yn uchel iawn a bu’n rhaid cael trafodaethau manwl dros ben cyn cynnig y cyllid i amryw helaeth o artistiaid talentog iawn. Doedd hynny ddim yn waith hawdd!"
Panellist Julie Weir, Sony Music "There is nowhere quite like Wales…..in people, landscape and culture – the warmth of the nation is unlike anywhere else. And in this, the Horizons panel themselves are a great and varied bunch of knowledgeable individuals from all ends of the music and creative industries, that offer a broad insight into all elements of an artist’s career. The caliber of submissions from all over the country was very high and it was only after incredibly in depth discussions that the funding was awarded to a great variety of very talented artists. It was not an easy task!
