Oujé-Bougoumou, a Cree First Nation community in the James Bay region, built a central, wood-fired heating plant and a district energy system to heat all the buildings in the village. The system used an abundant local energy resource, sawdust from the nearby Barrette-Chapais sawmill, to heat their homes and public buildings, so as to avoid adverse effects on thecommunity's economic development.
