When he arrived in St. Boniface, Manitoba, he devoted every spare moment to the study of the Chippewa language. Father Belcourt possessed unusual linguistic ability and made such rapid progress that in a year he was prepared to instruct the aboriginals. On August 2, 1832, he wrote to a friend in Québec: "Already my tongue begins to bend like that of a Chippewa and to gabble a little Cree." Less than two years later, he would rather write in Chippewa than in French.

It succeeded easily and was so happy that it opened its beak to sing in triumph. No musical note emerged, just a grating, chirping sound. When the hummingbird's body shrank, its voice muscles became so tiny that it could no longer sing!

The prehistory of Quebec is explored in this rich multimedia virtual exhibit. Working on prehistoric archaeological sites from across Quebec, archaeologists from the Université du Québec à Montreal have uncovered centuries of historic objects from First Nation groups such as the Oneida, Mohawk, Iroquois, Inuit, Seneca, Algonquin, Cree, Huron, Micmac, Cayuga, Onondaga, Iroquois confederacy, Algonquians, Abenaki, Montagnais, Naskapi, as well as from the League of Five Nations. Featuring objects dating from the Early Paleoindian period to the Late Woodland period, the Echoes from the Past virtual exhibit creates a story as told by the landscape of Quebec's prehistory.

Fifteen years later, in 2008, the Art Gallery of Ontario commissioned Kent Monkman, who is Cree, to create an art piece in response to the new Canadian galleries which were built in 2005 to house part of Ken Thomas’ world-class private collection of more than 700 works of Canadian and Native art.13 Innovatively curated by Gerald McMaster, Plains Cree and a member of the Siksika Nation, the display includes traditional Native art such as Inuit carvings, Anisnaabe beadwork, and Haida masks, together with the works of contemporary Native artists like Morrisseau and Rebecca Belmore and Norval Morrisseau. These hang next to early Canadian artists Paul Kane, Cornelius Krieghoff and Emily Carr. Kent Monkman’s piece,
