Film directors have an important role to play in the communities. If Paul makes a film in English, he'll have it translated into Cree or whatever Aboriginal language his film subjects speak.

Matoush has always shown concern for others. A 1994-95 painting shows us a dormitory in one of those sinister places where they undertook to destroy the vital links connecting young Indians to their cultural heritage. The image is as raw as a cry of pain but the artist's craft in the canvas is an example of hope.

Cependant …
Josh, a hip hop artist, would rather be anywhere than with his dad on a final trip to their isolated cabin on their familyʼs traditional Cree territory in northern Saskatchewan. As the intergenerational gap between them becomes more apparent, so does the pull of a much greater force.

She co-directed the film "One More River – the Deal that Split the Cree". This was an important step in her life. To start off, since she was Mohawk, she knew practically nothing about Cree culture, which she had to learn on the ground. However, the co-director was a Cree, which made this task easier. Making a film about the culture of another First Nations people is very different from making one about your own.

When I attended University in the late 1990s and early 2000s, something happened within me that changed the way I saw my people, the Crees. I have known for a long time that the Crees were adapting to a new lifestyle since the signing of the James Bay Agreement in 1975. It was during my studies that I realized that I had the power within me to inform people about the state of the Crees and the hardships they are living through. This awakening I experienced challenged my art making and myself as a Cree person.

Another issue that is important to me is education in Cree territory. With all the signings of agreements and our attempts to adapt to this new way of life, I believe we have put education on the back burner the last several years. The youth in our communities are not learning, as they should.

"This painting/collage is about my identity or the discovery of my identity. It took me many years to figure out who I am. Was I cree, white, or something in between. I found out that I was truly "metis" in my heart. This painting is a representation of who I am. The painting can be divided into 3 parts vertically: The left side shows that I am not a Native (represented by the 3 native dancers with an x painted over them) The word "Nimwii" (which means no ) written over a red rectangle states that I am not a native. The only thing that identifies me as a native is the depiction of a goose on the upper left corner with 3 vertical strips that stand for the number 3 shows the number of geese I have killed at the time the painting was done.
  Columbus Day Legacy | F...
Columbus Day Legacy explores the quintessential American issues of free speech and ethnic pride against the backdrop of the ongoing Columbus Day parade controversy in Denver, Colorado. Navajo filmmaker Bennie Klain takes viewers into this very personal yet very public conflict, asking tough questions about identity and history in America. Since 1992, the Denver Italian-American community has proudly and publicly celebrated Columbus Day with a revived parade—long a part of the city’s history—much to the dismay of the local American Indian Movement chapter who are equally determined to vilify the man credited with “discovering” America. The history of this annual parade is peppered with both verbal and physical violence, challenging ideas of political correctness and freedom of assembly. Both the Italian- and Native Americans are strong, vibrant, tight-knit communities—a point conveyed by the film as it uncovers conflicting notions of the freedom of speech, the interpretation of history and what it means to be an “American.”
