  Ogofau Cefn-yr-Ogof: Cr...
Ymwelodd Charles Darwin â Cefn yn Awst 1831 yn ystod ei daith ddaearegol gyda'r Athro Adam Sedgwick. Disgrifiodd Darwin y galchfaen yn Cefn ac yn ei lyfr nodiadau mae'n nodi bod Sedgwick wedi gweld esgyrn rhinoseros ym mwd yr ogof; mae nodiadau Sedgwick yn dangos i ddant rhinoseros gael ei ddarganfod.
Charles Darwin visited Cefn in August 1831 during a geological tour with Professor Adam Sedgwick. Darwin described the limestone at Cefn and an entry in his notebook observes that Sedgwick spotted rhinoceros bones in mud in the cave; Sedgwick's notes state that a rhinoceros tooth was found. Unfortunately neither commented on the palaeontological significance of the find. Which cave did Darwin visit? Cefn Cave is the more likely, as records of a visit by the Reverend Edward Stanley the following year inform us that landscaping had left 'bones in the mud for the taking' and that many bones were spread as fertiliser on the fields below. Stanley recorded seeing a rhinoceros tooth in the landowner's collection - could this be the tooth found by Sedgwick and Darwin? We shall never know for sure.

Roedd yn siŵr o ffeindio'i ffordd allan yn hwyr neu'n hwyrach ac, yn wir i chi, o'r diwedd fe welodd olau o tano ac fe lithrodd i lawr gan ddisgwyl gweld Mr Grimes a'r forwyn a'r ystafell lle cychwynnodd ei daith i fyny'r simnai.
He'd find his way out in the end, and sure enough, at last he saw light below him, and shinned down expecting to see Mr. Grimes and the house maid, and the familiar room. Instead, when his feet touched the bars of the grate, and peeped out from the fire place, he found himself somewhere quite different - quite different from anything he had ever seen.

“We've put together a great programme of activities for the Easter holidays here at the National Wool Museum, this year. As well as activities in the museum itself, we've also been working on a new Village Trail around Dre-fach Felindre, to find out why it was once called the Huddersfield of Wales and visitors over the holidays can be among the first to try this out.”

Bu Gwen John yn mynychu Ysgol Gelfyddyd Gain y Slade yn Llundain rhwng 1895 a 1898, a bu'n astudio am gyfnod byr ym Mharis. Ym 1903, aeth gyda Dorelia McNeill, a oedd yn fuan i ddod yn gariad ac yn ysbrydoliaeth i Augustus, ei brawd, ar daith gerdded trwy Ffrainc.
Gwen John attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London between 1895 and 1898, and studied briefly in Paris. In 1903, she accompanied Dorelia McNeill, soon to be her brother Augustus's lover and muse, on a walking tour through France. By the beginning of 1904, she had settled in Paris, where she earned a living by modelling. She lived on the top floor of 87 rue du Cherche-Midi between 1907 and 1909. This sparsely furnished room appears repeatedly in work of this period. The empty chair, discarded clothes and open book suggest the artist's invisible presence, and the painting conveys much about her life, a sense of controlled passion, of order, quiet and absolute calm.

Mae darganfyddiad ac archwiliadau cyntaf yr ogofau hefyd yn cael eu hymchwilio a'r awgrym yw bod Darwin yn ymwelydd gydag Ogof Cefn yn Awst 1831 yn ystod ei daith o amgylch gogledd Cymru gyda'r Athro Adam Sedgwick o Brifysgol Caergrawnt.
The reports on the Pontnewydd Cave and Elwy Valley Cave project are approaching finalization. These will provide a fully up to date account of the findings of the research project undertaken between 1978 and 2006. The volume will bring together the new dating, the detailed descriptions of the hominin fossils, artefact studies, and faunal work undertaken during this time. The monograph will include a chapter on 'The History of the Caves' by Elizabeth A. Walker and Tristan Gray Hulse (Bont Newydd resident). The project will draw together the legends associated with Saint Meiriadog, after whom the parish is named, the diarists and travelers notes from the sixteenth century and beyond for the first time. These include Leland, Pennant and Fenton. The discovery and first explorations of the caves are also being researched and the indications are that Darwin was a brief visitor to Cefn Cave in August 1831 during his tour of North Wales with Professor Adam Sedgwick of Cambridge University. The tale of the investigation of the caves is entwined with the understanding of glacial theory and the contribution of the caves to the debate will be elucidated.
