At the beginning of the letter, we are given an account of the voyage: there is a description of the ship colliding with another ship, the "islands of ice" they saw, the method used to share the water at the beginning of the journey and how the food and water became scarce during the journey. Because of this shortage, they had to land in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to buy more supplies. Even though they didn't come across bad weather as such, the journey was a long one and he said that he had to be part of five funeral services during the voyage.

Between May 1851 and May 1852, R. D. Thomas (Iorthryn Gwynedd) went on a journey through New York state, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He recorded his observations on the development of the country and the Welsh settlements there in a comprehensive journal, called: America: neu Amrywiaeth o Nodiadau am yr Unol Daleithiau; Buddiol i Ymfudwyr (America: miscellaneous notes about the United States; useful for emigrants). The land west of the Great Miami River had not been inspected at the time, and was therefore not for sale to settlers. Edward Bebb, Ezekiel Hughes, and others, had to camp nearby for around 4 years until the land came on the market. When the chance came, Edward Bebb bought half a parcel of land from the Government in Dry Fork, Morgan Township, Butler County, where he built a wooden cabin. He then embarked on a return journey to Wales to visit his home district of Llanbrymair and to look for a partner.
