  Y Fordaith
Ceir hanesion am y fordaith ar ddechrau'r llythyr: disgrifir y llong yn taro llong arall, yr "ynysoedd o rew" a welwyd, y modd y câi'r dŵr ei rannu ar ddechrau'r daith a phan aeth y bwyd a'r dŵr yn brin yn ystod y siwrnai.
At the beginning of the letter, we are given an account of the voyage: there is a description of the ship colliding with another ship, the "islands of ice" they saw, the method used to share the water at the beginning of the journey and how the food and water became scarce during the journey. Because of this shortage, they had to land in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to buy more supplies. Even though they didn't come across bad weather as such, the journey was a long one and he said that he had to be part of five funeral services during the voyage.
  Ezekiel Hughes
Penderfynodd Ezekiel Hughes aros yn Philadelphia dros y gaeaf a chychwyn ar daith tua'r gorllewin yn y gwanwyn. Teithiodd ef ac Edward Bebb ac un arall i gyfeiriad yr afon Ohio ac ymhen tri mis cyraeddasant dref Cincinnati.
Ezekiel Hughes decided to stay in Philadelphia over winter and head west in the spring. He and Edward Bebb and one other traveled towards Ohio River and within three months they had arrived in the town of Cincinnati.

cyngor ynglŷn â pharatoi am y daith - sut i drefnu llety a dewis llong ar ôl cyrraedd Lerpwl, faint fyddai costau teithio yn y cabin a'r "steerage", pa fwydydd i'w paratoi cyn mynd, sut i osgoi iselder, sut i ymddwyn yn gyffredinol ar y llong a beth i'w ddisgwyl yn Efrog Newydd.
advice on how to prepare for the journey - how to arrange accommodation and choose a ship after arriving in Liverpool, how much it would cost to sail in the cabin and steerage, which food to prepare before leaving, how to avoid feeling depressed, how to conduct oneself generally on the ship and what to expect in New York.
  Amaethyddiaeth
Rhwng mis Mai 1851 a Mai 1852, aeth R. D. Thomas (Iorthryn Gwynedd) ar daith trwy dalaith Efrog Newydd, Ohio a Pennsylvania. Cofnododd ei sylwadau am ddatblygiad y wlad a'r cymunedau Cymreig mewn llyfr nodiadau cynhwysfawr, sef: America: neu Amrywiaeth o Nodiadau am yr Unol Daleithiau; Buddiol i Ymfudwyr.
Between May 1851 and May 1852, R. D. Thomas (Iorthryn Gwynedd) went on a journey through New York state, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He recorded his observations on the development of the country and the Welsh settlements there in a comprehensive journal, called: America: neu Amrywiaeth o Nodiadau am yr Unol Daleithiau; Buddiol i Ymfudwyr (America: miscellaneous notes about the United States; useful for emigrants). By Iorthryn Gwynedd (NLW 9521A).

Erbyn 1858, roedd William a Hannah a'r plant yn barod i symud i California, felly ym mis Awst y flwyddyn honno aethant ar agerlong o Coalport i ddinas Kansas ac ymlaen wedyn ar wagen i dref Emporia ond ni chyrhaeddodd y teulu ben y daith.
By 1858, William and Hannah and the children were ready to move to California, so in August of that year they went by steamboat from Coalport to Kansas city, and then onwards by wagon to the town of Emporia. But the family did not reach their destination.

Doedd dim pwrpas i neb fynd â'i ddillad gorau ar y llong, wedi'r cyfan doedd dim modd eu golchi na'u sychu'n hawdd ac erbyn cyrraedd pen y daith, fe fyddai tar a baw arnyn nhw ac fe fyddai halen y môr wedi dechrau eu difetha.
No-one needed to wear their best clothes on the ship, after all there was no means of washing or drying them easily and by the time they reached the end of the journey, they would be filthy with mud and tar and salt from the sea would have started to ruin them.
  Yr American
"Y dynion sydd a chymhwysderau addas i 'r daith hon, ydynt y rhai sydd yn dysgwyl cael dail surion, a chwpaneidiau chwerwon, yn gymysgedig â 'r melus win; dyna y rhai na chânt eu siomi wrth gyfnewid eu gwlad."
"Parents, bringing up families, and owning property, and almost failing to keep their heads above water, in spite of all efforts, would be much better off if they went to America, where they would, undoubtedly, soon see a great change in their circumstances, for better."
  Y Fordaith
"Mewn un o'r llongau a elwir 'Liners' y mae y goreu i ddyfod drosodd yma, oblegyd eu bod wedi eu gwneuthur yn addasach i'r daith, y cadbeniaid a'r morwyr yn well, a mwy o ddarpariadau ynddynt i wynebu y dymhestl."
"The best way of coming over here is on one of the ships called 'Liners', because they have been built to be more suitable for the journey, the captains and sailors are better, and the ships are better prepared to face the tempests."

Dyma ddiwedd y daith i rai. Roedd digon o gyfleoedd gwaith yn y dinasoedd i weision, morynion, crefftwyr a gwyr busnes ond i eraill, oedd wedi rhoi eu bryd ar brynu tir, roedd taith drafferthus arall o'u blaenau.
This was the end of the journey for some. There were plenty of work opportunities in the cities for servants, maids, craftsmen and businessmen but for others, who had set their heart on buying land, there was another troublesome journey ahead of them.

Un o'r anawsterau mwyaf oedd yn wynebu'r ymfudwyr yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg oedd croesi môr yr Iwerydd. Roedd y fordaith i America yn cymryd tua 5 i 6 wythnos fel arfer ond os oedd y tywydd yn wael, gallai'r daith gymryd ddwywaith gymaint â hynny.
One of the main difficulties that faced the emigrants in the nineteenth century was crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The voyage to America usually took 5 to 6 weeks but if the weather was bad, the journey could take twice as long. Most of the emigrants crossed in sailing ships and conditions on board such ships would be atrocious.
  Y Fordaith
Cychwynnodd y teulu ar y daith wythnos yn ddiweddarach ac ymddengys eu bod wedi cael taith hwylus ar y cyfan. Y peth gwaethaf, yn ôl Rowland, oedd y cyfleusterau paratoi bwyd ar y llong - dim ond 12 lle oedd yno i wneud bwyd i 900 o deithwyr!
The family embarked on the journey a week later and it seems that they had an agreeable journey on the whole. The worst thing, according to Rowland, was the facilities to prepare food on the ship - there were only 12 places to prepare food for 900 passengers!

Lluniwyd y gyfrol fach hon ym 1851 gan R. D. Thomas ('Iorthryn Gwynedd'), pan aeth ar daith i godi arian yn yr Unol Daleithiau er mwyn talu dyledion ei gapeli. Ymwelodd â nifer o gymunedau Cymreig yn nhalaith Ohio a chofnododd sylwadau amrywiol mewn llyfr nodiadau.
This small notebook was written in 1851 by R. D. Thomas ('Iorthryn Gwynedd'), while he was traveling in the United States to raise money to pay for the debts of his chapels. He visited many Welsh settlements in the state of Ohio and he noted various observations in a notebook.

Nid ar chwarae bach y byddai rhywun yn codi pac a'i morio hi am America ar ddechrau'r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, felly mae'n rhaid bod gan yr arloeswyr cynta' obeithion uchel pan oedden nhw'n cyrraedd gwlad yr addewid. Ond beth oedd yn eu disgwyl ar ddiwedd y daith?
It was no easy matter for people to pack their bags and leave for America at the beginning of the nineteenth century, so the first pioneers must have had high hopes when they reached the promised land. But what was awaiting them at the end of the journey? What kind of a place was Ohio?
  Sir Hamilton, Ohio
Yn ystod ei daith trwy rai o daleithiau America, treuliodd R. D. Thomas (Iorthryn Gwynedd) fis Ionawr 1852 yn Cincinnati a rhyfeddodd at faint y ddinas ac at ei heolydd a'i strydoedd trefnus a'i thrigolion.
During his journey through some of the states of America, R. D. Thomas (Iorthryn Gwynedd) spent January 1852 in Cincinnati and was amazed at the size of the city and its organized streets and highways and its residents. His thoughts were written in a notebook, which has been digitized as part of the Wales-Ohio project.
  William Bebb
Pan ddaeth y cyfle, prynodd Edward Bebb hanner rhan o dir gan y Llywodraeth yn Dry Fork, Trefgordd Morgan, Sir Butler ac adeiladodd gaban pren arno. Yna, cychwynnodd ar daith yn ôl i Gymru i ymweld â'i hen gymdogaeth yn Llan-brynmair ac i chwilio am gymar.
The land west of the Great Miami River had not been inspected at the time, and was therefore not for sale to settlers. Edward Bebb, Ezekiel Hughes, and others, had to camp nearby for around 4 years until the land came on the market. When the chance came, Edward Bebb bought half a parcel of land from the Government in Dry Fork, Morgan Township, Butler County, where he built a wooden cabin. He then embarked on a return journey to Wales to visit his home district of Llanbrymair and to look for a partner.

Dros hanner can mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, bu George Roberts yn hel atgofion am y daith hir a helbulus honno o Lanbryn-mair i America ac fe'u cofnododd mewn llythyr.
Over half a century later, George Roberts remembered that long and arduous journey from Llanbryn-mair to America, and recorded them in a letter.
