Atomised – This French bestseller 1998 had the effect of a time bomb when it first appeared in 1998. It is a survey of the development of the morals and causes of contemporary individualism. Against the story of two stepbrothers – the dry scientist Michel, and sexual outlaw Bruno – it captures, succinctly and with dry humour, the life of the middle generation. The strength of the work lies above all in its hyperrealistic nature, the author’s sense of detail and humour, the narrative gradation and the tenacity with which it caricatures the modern-day world. Critics agree that

On Hens’ Wings is the first production in the Bratislava Puppet Theatre’s repertoire designed for young people and adults. It is inspired by the novel of the same name by Slovak-Swiss writer Irena Brežná, which first appeared in German in 2007. Brežná left Czechoslovakia as a child with her parents in 1968. Both the book and the play deal with life in an “eastern bloc” country in the 1950s. The main heroine is the Young Pioneer Jana, who succumbs to the influence of the official ideology in school, while her family environment is totally different. Her father, an intellectual, is transferred to a factory, her mother is even briefly imprisoned. After her mother’s return from prison and the death of her beloved leader Stalin, Jana finds her previous certainties crumbling.

Jeden z nejvýraznějších českých režisérů mladé generace Jan Mikulášek nastudoval provokativní francouzský bestseller, v němž autor na pozadí příběhu dvou nevlastních bratrů – rezervovaného vědce Michela a sexuálního štvance Bruna – výstižně a se suchým humorem vykresluje život střední generace.
Jan Mikulášek, one of the most distinctive Czech directors of the young generation, stages this provocative French bestseller, in which Houellebecq, against the story of two half brothers – reserved scientist Michel and sexual outlaw Bruno – describes, cogently and with dry humour, the life of the middle generation. Critics agree that Atomised is a book “as fundamental for the late 20th century as Camus’ The Stranger and Sartre’s Nausea were to the Sixties.” The strength of the text lies in its hyperrealistic level, the author’s sense of detail and humour, the narrative gradation and the dourness with which he characterises the modern world. Once again, Mikulášek shows his unusual feeling for stage metaphor, the artistic side of a production and for the precise rhythm of a production, including choice of music.

Divadlo Alfa - Předchůdce Divadla Alfa – Divadlo dětí – zahájilo činnost v září 1966. Současný tvůrčí tým (umělecký šéf a režisér T. Dvořák, dramaturg P. Vašíček, scénograf I. Nesveda) spolu s externími spolupracovníky s dvanáctičlenným hereckým souborem upřednostňuje komediální pojetí divadla s důrazem na práci s loutkou.
Divadlo Alfa – The predecessor of the Alfa Theatre – the Children’s Theatre – was created in 1966. The current creative team (artistic head and director Tomáš Dvořák, dramaturg Pavel Vašíček and set designer Ivan Nesveda), together with external collaborators and a twelve-member company of actors, favours a comedic concept of theatre and emphasises the use of puppets. The theatre performs to a wide public, offering a repertoire that is varied both in theme and genre, from classic and modern fairy tale to world drama. The master works – and the most awarded productions – of recent years were the productions of Goodness Gracious, It’s the Dogheads (1999), The Three Musketeers (2006), which won 27 awards in the Czech Republic and abroad, and James Blond. Since 1967 the theatre has co-organised the Skupa’s Pilsen festival, a competitive biennial review of Czech professional puppet, and now also alternative, theatre.

The National Theatre Târgu-Mureș The only theatre in Romania with national status to have two companies playing in two languages with two repertoires (Hungarian and Romanian), while functioning as a single institution. The National Theatre of Târgu-Mureș is the successor of the Secler Theatre, founded in 1946 as the first institutional theatre company in the town. Initially in Hungarian, from 1962 also with a Romanian company, the theatre is one of the cornerstones of Târgu-Mureș’s cultural life. It functions as a repertory theatre, and in accordance with its national status, it aims to represent and communicate the values of both cultures. In the spirit of interculturalism, the two theatre companies work together, and by inviting foreign guest directors, the theatre opens itself towards European theatrical endeavours. The Hungarian company, named after a former director and manager, Miklós Tompa, considers its main task to be contemporary dramaturgy, modern theatrical forms and the reading of contemporary classic works of literature.

Alfa Theatre Alfa Theatre’s direct forerunner, the Children’s Theatre, opened in September 1966 in the ALFA premises on Americká street. In 1992 it moved to a modern building at Rokycanská 7, and changed to its current title. It is maintained by the City of Pilsen. The theatre’s current creative team (artistic head and director Tomáš Dvořák, dramaturg Pavel Vašíček and set designer Ivan Nesveda) addresses a broad audience – children, young people and adults – offering all of them an alternative to the dominant media culture. This alternative provides literary and artistic quality, original staging techniques (all sorts of puppet techniques in combination with live actors) and a synthetic stage form, in which music (often live) always plays an important role. The repertoire is varied in both theme and genre, from classic and modern fairytales to world drama. Since 1970 the theatre has undertaken over 100 foreign tours, mostly in the last ten years. Since 1967 the theatre has been the joint organiser of the SKUPA'S PILSEN festival, a competitive bienniale of Czech professional puppet and alternative theatre.
