He will have several meetings with the Burundian partners of the FDFA’s Human Security Division active in supporting local peacebuilding efforts. Mr. Burkhalter will also visit a health-related project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Uvira in South Kivu (DRC). Since 2009, support for the renovation of hospitals in the region and efforts to strengthen the healthcare system have helped to improve access to healthcare for an estimated one million people.

Until the end of 2010, Swiss activities in Northern Africa had been rather modest, with the exception of the SECO-sponsored programme in Egypt and the FDFA Human Security Division’s programme to promote human rights and peace policies in Egypt.

Nach seinen Studien der Philosophie in Genf und Paris, war er von 1978 bis 1981 als Übersetzer/Dolmetscher bei der Schweizerischen Botschaft in Moskau tätig. Danach war er Assistent an der Universität in Zürich, wo er den Doktor der Philosophie erhielt. Während dieser Periode, war er für das IKRK jeweils für Kurzeinsätze in Pakistan und Tadschikistan tätig. Von 1991 bis 1995 war Herr Amberg massgeblich für den Aufbau der humanitären Hilfe des Bundes für Osteuropa, insbesondere Ex-Jugoslawien, bei der Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit DEZA verantwortlich. 1992 wurde er als Beobachter des Referendums nach Bosnien und Herzegowina entsandt. 1993 leitete er eine Gruppe von Wahl-Beobachtern in Russland und 1994 ebenfalls in der Ukraine. Herr Amberg übernahm 1996 die operationelle Verantwortung für die OSZE-Langzeitmissionen im Stab für die Koordination der Schweizerischen OSZE-Präsidentschaft, mit dem Titel eines Botschafters. Diese Funktion übte er bereits 1995 aus. 1997 erfolgte seine Versetzung als erster Mitarbeiter des Missionschefs und Botschaftsrat nach Belgrad. 2000 wurde er in der gleichen Funktion nach New Dehli versetzt, aber mit dem Titel eines Ministers. Seit 2004 ist Herr Amberg als Minister und erster Mitarbeiter des Missionschefs in Moskau tätig.

Con il titolo di ambasciatore, Lorenzo Amberg ha assunto nel 1996 la responsabilità operativa della sede per le missioni di lunga durata dell’OCSE; ha esordito con tale funzione nel 1995. Nel 1997 è stato trasferito presso l’ambasciata svizzera a Belgrado in qualità di primo collaboratore del capomisssione, con il titolo di consigliere d’ambasciata e, dal 2000, sempre per la stessa funzione presso la rappresentanza svizzera a Nuova Delhi, con il titolo di ministro. Dal 2004 è primo collaboratore del capomissione a Mosca con il titolo di ministro.

In addition, Switzerland has been supporting the transition process in Serbia through a cooperation programme since 1991. The main focus here is on economic development and employment, strengthening the rule of law and democracy as well as the integration of disadvantaged groups. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter took the opportunity offered by today's visit to Belgrade to visit the project 'Roma Inclusion' in the vicinity of the Serbian capital. The project, supported by Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, helps children from the Roma minority to gain easier access to the education system.

La DDC intervient principalement dans le développement rural, l’économie locale, l’éducation et la formation professionnelle ainsi que la gestion publique locale.

Die DEZA setzt sich primär ein für die ländlichen Entwicklung, die lokale Wirtschaftsförderung, die Schul- und Berufsbildung und die Lokalverwaltung. Seit dem Ausbruch des bewaffneten Konflikts in Nordmali im Januar 2012 und der Nahrungsmittelkrise im Sahel wurde die humanitäre Hilfe stark ausgebaut. Die Schweiz engagiert sich in Mali zudem mit einem Friedensförderungsprojekt.

L'aiuto umanitario ha subito una forte impennata da quando è scoppiato il conflitto armato nel Nord del Mali nel gennaio 2012 e in seguito alla crisi alimentare nel Sahel. Inoltre la Svizzera è attiva nel Paese con il proprio programma di politica di pace.

Its efforts are focused on three priority areas: contributions in cash and in kind to the humanitarian organisations (ICRC, UN, international NGOs, local relief agencies); direct bilateral aid; and the secondment of technical experts to UN partner organisations from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA).

Une aide a également été fournie à Benghazi dans le domaine médical. L'ODM et la DDC ont en outre favorisé le rapatriement de travailleurs migrants.

Within a matter of days, Swiss Humanitarian Aid dispatched emergency response teams on the ground to distribute emergency food and sanitary supplies. In Benghazi, medical projects were implemented. At the same time, the FOM and the SDC provided funding to help migrant workers return to their home countries.

Die humanitäre Hilfe des Bundes war in den Tagen der Krise mit Soforteinsatz-Teams vor Ort und hat den Menschen in Not Nahrungsmittel und Hygieneartikel verteilt, in Benghazi wurden Projekte im medizinischen Bereich umgesetzt. Ausserdem unterstützten BFM und DEZA die Heimreise von gestrandeten Gastarbeitern.

Durante i giorni della crisi, l’Aiuto Umanitario della Confederazione era presente sul posto con un team di pronto intervento e ha distribuito generi alimentari e articoli igienico-sanitari alle persone bisognose, mentre a Bengasi sono stati realizzati progetti in ambito medico. Inoltre, l’UFM e la DSC hanno agevolato il rimpatrio di lavoratori stranieri bloccati nel Paese.
