Evelien Lohbeck (1983) started her studies in animation in 2004 at the Art Academy St. Joost in Breda. She choose animation for its numerous possibilities of visualisation. She has learned a lot of different animation techniques (rothoscope, 3D computer animation, stop-motion etc). In her final year she wanted to work more experimentally and find new/other ways to animate, which resulted in her film Notebook.

A look at the life on the Mediterranean borders of Europe, where tourists try to relax while "illegal" immigrants struggle for a chance of a better life. Breaking out of a strictly confined tourist zone, two Swiss children experience quickly that reality here has very little to do with the posh life in their camping site. A storm hits the shore and washes away almost all distinctions between the rich and the poor.

Once upon a time there were seven brothers who wandered through the streets of their village, looking for inspiration for fairy tales. The ideas they came up with, however, didn't look much like the traditional fairy tales we are used to. At home, the brothers wrote their stories down, unaware of their shortcomings. But then they heard their last tale being acted out next door, quite differently from the way they had written it. The brother's wanderings are shown in live action; the fairy tales are animated.

Aaron Hughes lives in Brooklyn and is a "director" in a different sense. He's directionally challenged and accidentally directed his latest short Backwards completely in the wrong direction! Before that he continued to work as animator, illustrator, cartoonist, and professor of animation at NYU and the Pratt institute. Before that, he struggled to find work after graduating. Way before that, he was born down in Texas, near the border of Mexico. He made shorts Fred’s Box (2003), Petunia (2002) and many commissioned works.

For almost three decades there were attempts at imitating Disney’s formula, but something completely different happened only with The Beatles. Yellow Submarine (1968) is the film starring The Beatles that connected motifs from their songs into a crazy psychedelic journey. The film has always been attributed to The Beatles; had it not been for their commercial success (fame and money), it would never have probably been made. Many people couldn’t say who directed, drew and animated it. Only recently I found out that one of Animafest’s favourite filmmakers, Paul Driessen, worked on the film.

In 2004 he started the Tunis-based production company One Thousand and One Images (Mille et une Images) which produced numerous commercials and other animated works. He currently resides in Tunis and is working on original animated short films.

There are Spirits is a free visual interpretation of a Carl Gustav Jung’s dream. The dream starts off with a quite common archetype: one's own home, the most familiar place for each of us, as an unexplored entity. Jung finds himself entering a series of "secret" rooms: the first room is a zoological laboratory where his father carries out several experiments. The second is a bedroom where his mother attempts to capture spirits. The third is a big hotel's Hall, prelude to thousands of other rooms, where an orchestra is playing.
