Following the election of the European Parliament President, Vice-Presidents and Quaestors last week, MEPs elected their committee chairs this week. DEVE Members re-elected Linda McAvan (Socialists & Democrats, United Kingdom) as committee Chair and also confirmed the vice Chairs: Maurice Ponga (EPP, France), Paavo Matti Väyrynen (ALDE, Finland), Stelios Kouloglou (GUE/NGL, Greece) and Nirj Deva (ECR, United Kingdom).

The discussion with experts was organised by Habitat for Humanity Europe, Middle East and Africa, Cities Alliance and Vice Chair of the DEVE Committee Nirj Deva MEP (ECR, UK). The main purpose of the meeting was to look into urban challenges currently faced by countries of Africa and Asia and what EU development policies are needed to better deal with the rapid growth of cities. Experts also presented the role that the EU can play in shaping the New Urban Agenda to be adopted at Habitat III conference in Quito, Ecuador, in October.
