IL FSC è un’organizzazione indipendente, di pubblica utilità e attiva a livello internazionale, che si pone l’obiettivo di tutelare foreste ed esseri umani. Il presupposto per tale scopo è la certificazione delle foreste e delle industrie che lavorano il legno secondo criteri unitari a livello mondiale, nei quali l’FSC tiene in considerazione in egual misura i requisiti economici, ecologici e sociali per la risorsa «foresta».
