The study showed that GPs were responsible for the majority of prescriptions of psychotropic drugs. GPs both initiated and maintained the treatment with such drugs for most patients. Psychiatrists’ share of the prescriptions was primarily among children and adolescents, and fell rapidly with increased age of patients. The thesis concluded that GPs have a key function in the Norwegian health care system, even when it comes to mental disorders. Improving mental health care is only achieved in a cost effective manner if GPs are a major part of the effort.
