In proximity to the Russian trapping stations are often found foundations for Russian Orthodox crosses. These large wooden crosses, once erected at numerous places along the coasts of Svalbard, have now fallen down or have been removed, except for two crosses still standing on Nordaustlandet. The Russian Orthodox crosses were most likely erected for a number of reasons, including the need for protection from higher powers, to bring luck in trapping, as grave markers and as territorial markers. The crosses also functioned as navigational signs.

A few years after Andrée's departure new activity took place in the bay, this time as Walter Wellman prepared for his bid for the North Pole in an airship. He built an airship hangar, house and gas production works. Wellman made three failed attempts at reaching the North Pole: in 1906, 1907 and 1909. Wellman and his crew pioneered airship technology and constructed solutions which were well ahead of their time. But in 1906 the new technology completely failed, and they could but abandon the attempt. In 1907 the airship took off as expected, but it descended onto the glacier Smeerenburgbreen soon after. In 1909 events went as follows: the America rose and floated optimistically northwards, as Örnen had done 12 years before – over Hollenderneset and Fuglesongen and over the fast ice, which lay firm in Norskøysundet. But then the towing rope detached itself and fell in a heap onto the ice below. The wind gained strength and after a while the airship itself ended up on the ice too.

Parry saw the coast of Svalbard in the middle of May. The expedition followed the coast eastwards on the northern side of Svalbard looking for a good port for the main ship. Parry’s choice was a good port in Sorgfjorden, later named Heclahamna, after the ship. The choice could easily have been fatal, which the old whalers from previous centuries could have told him. Drift ice enters Sorgfjorden quickly from Hinlopenstretet and closes the passageway in and out of the fjord. One must keep a constant lookout to avoid an involuntary overwintering on a ship that is stuck in the ice. No whaler would have left the ship unattended for two months in Heclahamna. Parry was lucky. The summer of 1827 was unusually free of ice.

Captain Gunnar Isachsen happened to be in the area with the marine vessel Farm, and came to the rescue. The airship was taken back to Camp Wellman. To make it take off so that it could be towed into the hangar, the fuel tanks were punctured. When the balloon had been dragged onto dry land and was tipped over, the fuel flowed forwards, and the balloon skidded, broke free and hovered in the air. The gondola came loose and crashed onto the ground. The balloon went higher and higher until it exploded with a massive bang and fell into the water. Wellman took a bow and waved his hat, before he went to get a bottle of champagne and sat down to play solitaire. After a while he ordered the hangar to be lengthened by 11 m (Rossnes, 1993: 119). There was no new go for Wellman from Vigohamna on Danskøya.

Kanskje gikk tankene til andre og sørligere egne langt borte fra den harde hvalfangstvirkeligheten i nord. Mens han satt der og tok seg en røyk, gikk pipa i stykker og hodet falt ned i mosen. Der ble den funnet flere hundre år senere av en annen person som satt og tok seg en røyk og en pust i bakken etter en lang dag med oppmålinger og tegninger av gravfeltet.
Who he was, where he came from, and when he was sat on Eolusneset, I will never know. The only evidence of his existence is a ruined clay pipe in the moss by a burial ground. But from this little fragment of the past, I can be sure that he was a whaler who visited Eolusneset some time in the 1600s or 1700s. He probably came to bury a colleague and a friendAfter the burial he sat down for a short rest somewhere that protected him from the weather, that had a view over the burial ground and the fresh grave. In the protected place, with the rocks as a backrest, he fired up his clay pipe and a last salute was sent to the deceased. While he was sat there, smoking, his clay pipe broke, and the head fell into the moss. There it was found several hundred years later by another person who had sat down for a cigarette and a rest after a long day of work. I took the cigarette with me when I left. But the clay pipe is still there.
