The first paper was a focus group study exploring GPs’ experiences on addressing alcohol without prior invitation from the patient. We focused on why and how they asked, and what happened when they asked. We analyzed interview data from 13 GPs. Sometimes their asking was triggered by certain symptoms or health problems or by a general decline in the patient’s health, and sometimes by explicit concern from family members. They also sometimes asked routinely without a prior suspicion, e.g. with health certificates, pregnancies, or the first encounter with a new patient. How they did it was adapted to their own style, the patient in front of them and the specific situation. The main finding in this study was that they addressed alcohol in many different situations based on clinical relevance, and in some routine situations they asked merely as a routine. We have coined the combination of these strategies
