For many applications the use of optical fiber sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings is recommendable. Relating to the sensors, there are, however, open questions, particularly with respect to the long-term durability of the structure to be measured. To evaluate the sensors, special instruments are required, which so far have been generally constructed for applications in the laboratory. For low-maintenance use under industrial or otherwise unfavourable conditions, they are not suited. In addition, there are hardly any appropriate measuring devices to record dynamic vibration processes. Regarding the measuring instruments, besides reliability issues especially questions regarding the actual metrological performance remain unanswered.
