The course introduces basics concepts in geochemistry with the aim to explain and understand geological processes and the distribution of elements. Subjects in the course cover the chemical and isotopic composition of the Earth and the solar system, the geochemistry of important gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, as well as the behavior of acids, bases, buffers, and redox processes in natural waters. The course also includes an introduction of organic geochemistry. The course consists of lectures, theoretical exercises, and laboratory exercises.

This course deals with modern methods used for geochemical investigations in the geosciences. You will learn about different methods for sampling and chemical analysis of gases, water, sediment, soil, and rocks. The course puts emphasis on the quantitative analysis of natural samples using field- and laboratory-based methods. We will cover nutrient, redox, and pH chemistry of aquatic environments, and the analysis of gases in the atmosphere, soil, and sediment. We will also conduct molecular organic chemical analyses of soils and sediments. The course consists of lectures, theoretical exercises, laboratory exercises, and fieldwork.
