In the event of a fire, people are most threatened not only by flames, but also potentially toxic smoke and gases. In fact, toxic gases are responsible for the majority of deaths among fire victims. That is the reason why fire warning and firefighting systems are best combined with specialist anti-smoke systems that help to discharge smoke and heat in a relatively quick and efficient way, as well as remove toxic gas from fire escape routes, rooms and buildings. Systems of this type significantly facilitate the process of evacuation from threatened areas, and reduce the risk of casualties in case of a fire. Safety measures may include openings in the roof and outer walls of the building, allowing smoke and gases to freely escape outside. Smoke dampers open when a smoke sensor detects and signals the threat to the central control unit. The procedure can also be activated manually by pressing emergency buttons. Apart from roof and façade openings, other elements that can prove important for the system are fresh air intakes in the lower parts of the building, and ventilation units for venting smoke and gases from the building. Kapsch provides services for the initial analysis, design and implementation of anti-smoke systems.

Fire warning systems consist of two main components: warning alarms (the so-called sensors) to automatically detect and indicate a fire, and devices to receive alarm signals and information on the damage (the so-called central control units). Kapsch offers a wide range of technical and functional solutions, built on products of world-renowned manufacturers. All the products are certified to conform with the EU Construction Products Directive and the Polish standards set by the CNBOP. In particular, Kapsch utilizes technologies offered by Bosch Security, a leading company in the field. Depending on the customer's specific needs, there are different types of sensors to choose from: optical sensors, thermal sensors, chemical sensors, or even multi-sensor detectors with adjustable sensitivity settings. They can detect smoke, heat or – as in the case of chemical sensors – gases produced in combustion (e.g. carbon monoxide). The principle of operation is quite simple: once a sensor detects fire, it sends a signal to the central control unit, i.e. an up-to-date computer that activates the alarm. The solution may be enhanced with an additional fire monitoring system. This function allows for alarm visualization and indicates the precise location of the fire on the building layout plan. The system can also indicate a specific sensor and give the name of the room. The central control unit of the fire warning system can automatically transfer alarm signals to other affiliated security systems. In such cases, it can trigger pre-programmed reactions such as starting the anti-smoke system or firefighting installation.
