Die einzigartige Ausbreitung der Ortschaft in der S. Maria-Ebene, entlang der parallel zur Spöll laufenden einzigen Straße, ist alles andere als ein Zufall. Vielmehr steht sie mit der langen Geschichte des Ortes in Verbindung.

The extraordinary stretch of Livigno on the plain of S. Maria, along the river Spöll - the only road through the valley - is no coincidence, and it is connected to the long history of the village. The wholy wooden houses are point to the South-East throughout the whole valley. They were close to one another allowing in the sun. In case of fire, they were designed not to carry over the flames to the neighbouring wooden house. Principally, during the long winter months there were lots of fires because of the fireplaces burning all winter long. Another problem was extinguishing the fires during the winter months, as the waters around Livigno were frozen.

La singolare estensione dell'abitato, nella Piana di S. Maria, lungo un'unica strada parallela allo Spöl, non è casuale ma legata alle ragioni d'essere e di vita dei tempi più antichi. Costruite in legno, erano disposte in fila, orientate verso Sud-Est e distanti l'una dall'altra quel tanto da poter ciascuna ricevere il sole e difendersi dagli incendi frequenti, sopratutto in inverno, quando il focolare doveva sempre restare acceso e l'acqua per spegnerli era ghiacciata.
