However the programme also leads back to the history of the Black Continent. The team filmed in Ujiji, where the famous meeting between the English missionary and Africa researcher Dr. David Livingstone and the journalist Henry Morton Stanley took place in 1871. Another filming location was the steamboat "Liemba", which was brought across land to Tanganyika Lake by the German East Africa troops before the First World War and worked there as the "Graf von Götzen" until it was sunk by Belgian troops in the First World War.

Jo Baier has made the story of Hölleisengretl into a TV film that ZDF is showing on Easter Sunday at 9.45pm. Portraying Graf's main character as an imperious, hard-hearted woman who pursues her goal with ruthlessness, Baier's Gretl is a woman "with whom one can sympathise. I have given her a story which has put her in a hostile environment." This environment is a village world, in which a woman who manages a magnificent estate alone is treated with suspicion. However, Gretl's married bliss only lasts a short time. Her husband, it soon transpires, is only interested in her property. Martina Gedeck plays the title role in this production, Hubert Achleitner, better known under his stage name Hubert von Goisern, Michael Lerchenberg, Josef Wierer, Enzi Fuchs and Fred Stillkrauth are to be seen in further roles.

Hölleisengretl is based on the story by Oskar Maria Graf (1894 - 1967), Die Geschichte von der buckligen Hölleisengretl (from the volume Kalendergeschichten, 1929) whose content largely returns to authentic events. "A homeland film in powerful pictures shaped by true details. From the meagre exactness of the Bavarian dialect arise characters in whose chasms we can establish ourselves," found the jury of the Deutsch Akademie der Darstellenden Künste, who awarded Jo Baier with the special award for director for Hölleisengretl at the Badener-Badener Days of Teleplay 1995. Apart from that, the film received a Telestar nomination.

"Gretl had keen almost penetrating eyes and she gave orders like a corporal. You will be sorry if she gets angry..." - so Oskar Maria Graf describes the main character of his story Die Geschichte von der buckligen Hölleisengretl (The story of the hunchbacked Hölleisengretl). The work was written in the twenties, the writer was probably inspired to do it by a trial that he attended as a spectator.
