Mae rhai brasluniau olew yn darlunio safleoedd ac adeiladau enwog, tra bod rhai eraill yn canolbwyntio ar gorneli di-nod o fyd natur. Mae'r tirlun cynnar hwn yn darlunio Rhaeadr Henryd ger Coelbren lle mae Afon Llech yn disgyn 90 troedfedd dros graig ar ei ffordd i Afon Tawe.
Some landscape oil sketches depict famous sites and buildings, while others focus on unassuming corners of nature. This early landscape depicts the HenrydFalls, near Coelbren, where the River Llech plunges 90 feet over a cliff on its way to the Tawe. It is one of a group of landscapes probably from the Lamb and Flag inn Glyn-Neath. This was a convenient centre from which to explore the Vale and was described by William Weston Young in 1835 as 'a comfortable inn to refresh at...it is very prettily seated, and the views from it very fine'. The artist Penry Williams was originally from Merthyr Tydfil, but eventually settled in Rome. Here his brushstrokes are free, impulsive, and parts of the picture have been left unfinished. This suggests he worked quickly to capture the effect of water foaming over the falls.

Darnau o graig naturiol o'r gofod sy'n syrthio i'r ddaear yw gwibfeini. Wrth iddynt basio drwy'r atmosffer mae'r ffrithiant yn cynhesu'r haenau allanol gan achosi iddynt ddisgleirio'n llachar. Dyma sy'n gyfrifol am ffenomen y sêr gwib.
Meteorites are natural pieces of rock that fall to Earth from outer space. As they pass through the atmosphere, the outer layers are heated by friction, causing them to glow brightly and giving rise to the visual phenomena of a shooting star.

'Cael gwaith' a wnâi hogyn a âi i weithio i'r chwarel; dechreuai fel 'belwr bach' (rybelwr), yn hel y graig sál o'r fargen. Ar y llaw arall, 'cael lle' y gwnâi hogyn a ddeuai'n brentis i'r Gilfach Ddu.
A boy who got work at the quarry was said to have 'found work'; he began as a rubbler, carting the waste rock away from the bargain. On the other hand, the boy who was apprenticed at Gilfach Ddu was said to have have 'found a place'. The standard of the apprenticeship in these workshops was recognised by employers and shipping companies all over the world.

A beth am y graig na chafodd ei defnyddio i wneud y llechi gorau? Ers talwm byddai cloddio tunnell o lechi yn golygu creu cymaint ag ugain tunnell o wastraff. Ond heddiw defnyddir pob dim —i godi tai, yn friciau ac yn deils, i adeiladu ffyrdd ac —ar ffurf powdwr mân iawn —mewn nwyddau fel colur a phowdwr talcym.
But what about the rock not used to make the best slates? In the past, quarrying a ton of slate could yield as much as twenty tons of waste. But today everything is used – as bricks and tiles for houses, to build roads, and – in the form of very fine powder – in toiletries such as make-up and talcum powder. The slate industry might be closer to you than you think!

Roedd draen wedi'i leinio â cherrig a'i gapio, a ddarganfuwyd yn 1995, gyda gwaelod wedi'i dorri i'r graig, yn rhedeg mewn llinell syth, o'r gogledd i'r de yn fras am tua 7m, yn groeslinol ar draws tu mewn yr adeilad.
The relationships between the stone-footed rectangular buildings which had been identified remained complex, but at this early stage of the excavation the main phasing was becoming apparent. Building 1(a) comprised a narrow rectangular 'long house' measuring at least 11.2m in length and 5.6m in width, with wall footings of carefully set unbonded limestone. A stone-lined and capped drain first recorded in 1995 was found to have a rock-cut bottom, whic lay in a straight line approximately north-south for a distance of about 7m, diagonally across the interior of the building. The drain appeared to have drained the semi-sunken hall floor, whose southern half consisted of either stone flagging or bare limestone. In the northern half of the structure lay a fine rectangular hearth neatly defined with kerb stones (1m x 1.6m), and which had at least three clay linings beneath its ashy fill It has provided a radiocarbon date of cal AD 780-980 (Beta-101535, 1170 +/- 40 BP).

Cloddir Tywodfaen Pennant o fynydd Gwrhyd, Cwm Tawe Uchaf, ac fe’i ffurfiwyd wrth i haen ar ôl haen o dywod ffurfio yng ngheg afon dros gyfnod o fwy na 300 miliwn o flynyddoedd cyn troi’n graig drwy broses o gladdu, gwasgu, codi ac erydu.
Quarried from Gwrhyd Mountain, Upper Swansea Valley, Pennant Sandstone is a result of numerous layers of sand laid down in a river mouth for over 300 million years before being converted into rock by burial, squeezing, uplift and erosion.

Awgryma'r ffaith fod y torwyr beddau wedi mynd i'r drafferth o dorri'r bedd yn y graig mai person pwysig oedd yr ymadawedig. Ar ben hynny, yn ôl y sôn, cafwyd hyd i ddau freichdlws metel a chasgliad o leiniau du, gleiniau gwahanu a botymau yn y bedd.
In 1828 a grave was discovered at Pen y Bonc, near Holyhead on Anglesey. Accounts of this discovery are incomplete, but the grave was dated to around 4,000 years. The person who was buried must have been important as the grave was cut into bare rock. A number of black beads and buttons were discovered in the grave.

Y darn o graig o'r lleuad yw'r eitem ddrutaf yn yr amgueddfa gyfan. Mae ei gwerth yn seiliedig ar gost teithio i'r lleuad i gael darn arall. Fe'i cedwir mewn amgylchedd nitrogen amddiffynnol, a does gan neb ar wahân i NASA, dim hyd yn oed curaduron yr amgueddfa, allwedd i agor y cês mewnol.
The precious rock is kept in a special airtight container filled with nitrogen to protect it from contamination. At 3.3 billion years old, it is considerably older than the most ancient Welsh rock, which is displayed alongside it - and a mere 702 million years old.

Baodingshan, ‘Copa’r Trysorau’, yw’r mwyaf syfrdanol o’r 75 safle teml wedi’u cerfio o garreg sy’n ffurfio Safle Treftadaeth y Byd Dazu yn ne-orllewin Tsieina. Mae 10,000 o ffigurau unigol i’w gweld yn y graig dywodfaen 500m, gafodd eu cerfio rhwng OC1177 a 1249.
May 2010. I’m standing next to the largest head I’ve ever seen. Carved in sandstone and painted, it belongs to the vast reclining Buddha at the heart of the Baodingshan cave temple. Baodingshan, ‘Summit of Treasures’, is the most impressive of the seventy-five rock-carved temple sites that make up the Dazu World Heritage Site in south-west China. 10,000 individual figures populate its 500m-long tree-shaded sandstone cliff, all carved between AD1177 and 1249.

Yn sgîl gwaith cloddio rhwng 1989 a 1993 ar grannog o'r canol oesoedd cynnar yn Llan-gors ger Aberhonddu (codwyd tua 890-93) a'r cloddio sy'n parhau ar safle Llanbedrgoch yn Ynys Môn, daeth gwybodaeth newydd i'r fei am aneddiadau canoloesol yng Nghymru. Bu gwaith maes hefyd yn ymchwilio i Graig Smalls oddi ar arfodir Sir Benfro, lle cafwyd dyrnfol cleddyf gwych wedi'i haddurno yn arddull Wrnes ac sy'n dyddio tua OC 1100.
Excavations conducted between 1989 and 1993 on the early medieval crannog at Llangorse near Brecon (constructed c.890-93) and the continuing programme of excavation on the multi-period site at Llanbedrgoch on Anglesey have shed new light on early medieval settlement in Wales. Other fieldwork has included an investigation of the Smalls Reef off the Pembrokeshire coast, findspot of a fine sword guard decorated in Urnes style, dated c.AD 1100. A number of papers and short articles have appeared, and the publication of the excavations at Llangorse is now in preparation.

Gweithia David Binns o Ddinbych mewn arddull foel, ddramatig sydd wedi ei dylanwadu nid yn unig gan ffurfiau pensaernïol a mecanyddol ac aestheteg Japaneaidd ond hefyd gan ansawdd a golwg y graig naturiol.
Other ceramic artists are inspired more directly by the Welsh landscape. Beverley Bell-Hughes of Llandudno Junction, for example, is interested in natural processes of change; echoes of tidal patterns and the effects of erosion can be seen in her work. David Binns, who lives in Denbigh, works in a dramatically minimalist style influenced not only by architectural and mechanical forms and Japanese aesthetics but also by the texture and appearance of natural rock.

The eastern end of Building 2 was located, indicating that it was at least 8.9m wide and 14m in length. Where preserved, the evidence for walls consisted of a continuous dry stone wall footing set within a shallow trench, and probably supported a timber superstructure. The post-hole excavated in 1994 was found to be located in the upper fill of a rock-cut bath-shaped sump or drain in the centre of the sunken floor of this building, and adjacent to a central setting of flagstones. Contexts associated with Building 2 produced tenth-century artefacts, including more iron knives (some with angle back), fragments of rotary quernstone, offcuts of antler and two largely complete red deer antler beams (with tines partially removed).
