It’s Art But It’s Not was one of seven innovative regeneration projects supported by this initiative. It was launched in 2015 with initial research and development work carried out in Penygraig. This stage, led by Cardiff-based international artist Rabab Ghazoul, was crucial to highlight the real value of the creative conversations as a way of engaging people, giving individuals the space and opportunity to contribute their voice to the process and support our drive towards a self-defining community. Working with young people in the community this work culminated in a visual art installation across the whole town.

Throughout May and June, artist Rabab Ghazoul has been working with a team of young Community Consultants in the Penygraig and Porth area of Rhondda Cynon Taff to design and run a series of creative conversations within the local community. Taking place in the space of a week the ‘conversations’ engaged with the resident community through pop up events that included utilising a local shop for a story exchange that saw locals share their thoughts and anecdotes about the area and presenting reoccurring themes and words on the high street.

Rabab has been working with communities in Porth and Penygraig in the Rhondda Cynon Taff valleys as part of the I:P:P project It’s Art But It’s Not since last year. It’s Art But It’s Not results from a partnership between Artes Mundi, Valleys Kids and RCT Homes and is part of a new Arts Council of Wales funding programme –  Ideas:People:Places. The programme aims to bring together local people and agencies to develop innovative initiatives that put the arts at the heart of those communities. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Owen Griffiths to join the second stage of this project together with other international artists.
