Rhan o graig sydd yn ymddangos uwchben wyneb gwely'r môr
The part of a rock formation that appears above the surface of the seabed.
  Ogofau Cefn-yr-Ogof: Cr...
Disgrifiodd Stanley y gwaith tirlunio ar Cefn a'r llwybrau cerdded a adeiladwyd yn y dyffryn, lle bu'n rhaid gwaredu rhannau o graig Cefn-yr-Ogof oedd yn ymwthio. Crëwyd cyfres o risiau graddol o waelod y dyffryn drwy Ogof Cefn.
Stanley described the landscaping of Cefn and the construction of walks through the valley which involved removing some of the projecting areas of cliff face on Cefn Rocks. A series of gentle steps and staircases were created from the valley bottom and through Cefn Cave. Huge quantities of deposit were removed from the cave to create a single passage connecting the two cave entrances. Stanley excavated within Cefn Cave in 1832. He found bones of straight-tusked elephant, rhinoceros and hippopotamus of last interglacial age (c. 125,000 years old), and deposits that interested many geologists and other scientists who visited the caves.

Ers talwm y chwarelwr ei hun fyddai'n gyfrifol am dalu a gofalu am ei raffau (yn ogystal â'i ffrwydron, ei gynion a'i dŵls eraill). Talai ar ei ganfed iddo felly gymryd gofal manwl o raffau a fyddai'n ei gynnal ac yntau, o bosib, yn gweithio ar graig gannoedd o fetrau o uchder.
In the machine shop there is a lathe dating from 1900, used for turning all sorts of things — from the incline drum's wheels to turntables. There is also another lathe, 6.4 metres long, used to turnthe transmission and propeller shafts for the company's fleet of steam ships. The slotting machine, on the other hand, was used to cut keyways in gear and pinion wheels, sprockets and drive pulleys. There is also a rope-weighing scale. The quarrymen themselves paid for their ropes and were responsible for caring for them (as well as their explosives, their chisels and other tools). So it paid them to take great care of ropes which would be bearing their whole weight — sometimes on a rock face hundreds of metres high.

A chan na wyddom fawr ddim am y banciau tywod anghysbell hyn, amcangyfrifon yn unig yw arwynebedd y cwrel, y cefnennau algaidd a'r graig noeth, a phrin bod bioamrywiaeth yr ardal wedi'i hastudio o gwbl.
The ridge represents one of the great 'unknowns' in terms of marine scientific study. So little is known about these remote banks that even the amounts of coral, algal ridges or bare rock are only estimated, and the biodiversity of the area is largely unstudied. In addition, the bank fisheries, which operate from small boats supported by mother ships, are of economic importance to the Seychelles and Mauritius. There is therefore a pressing need to investigate the structure of the Plateau, its physical effect on the area, the resources it sustains and the past, present and future human impact on these resources.

Yr un mor bwysig, mae'r gwaith wedi dangos nad oedd y chwareli yn canolbwyntio ar rwydweithiau cyfnewid dros bellter mawr, ond yn hytrach yn darparu ffynhonnell o graig o safon uchel ar gyfer cynhyrchu offer carreg a ddefnyddiwyd yn lleol.
The results have, to date, demonstrated that quarrying was far more extensive than previously realized, covering some hundreds of meters and involving quarrying to a depth of at least two meters in places. This activity has been dated to between 3700 - 3000 BC, with later use of the hill being demonstrated through the presence of charcoal dating to Early and Late Bronze Ages, the finding of a jet button, and the presence of burial cairns just above the quarries. Equally importantly, the work has shown that this quarrying was not focused on long distance exchange networks, but instead provided a source of high quality rock for the manufacture of stone tools which were then used locally.

Wrth ddefnyddio magnetometr i archwilio, daethpwyd o hyd i un ardal oedd yn llawn magnetedd. O gloddio yno, daethpwyd o hyd i bystdwll wedi'i dorri i'r graig mewn darn lle cafodd y tir ei lyfnu'n gyffredinol.
Excavation of a 'hot spot' of magnetic activity recorded during a magnetometer survey uncovered a post-hole cut into bedrock within an area of general levelling, thought to represent a house platform. There have since been five main areas of excavation, and the complex history of the site is becoming apparent.

Yn cael ei ddangos hefyd bydd y "Car Gwyllt", a ddefnyddid gan y dynion a oedd yn gweithio yn Chwarel Graig Ddu, Blaenau Ffestiniog i ddod i lawr yr incleiniau. Bydd yr arddangosfa hefyd yn cynnwys eitemau perthnasol eraill o gasgliad yr Amgueddfa, er enghraifft, "Ticad talu" o Chwarel Maenofferen a llyfr rheolau ar gyfer 1945 o Chwarel yr Oakley.
Also on display will be the Welsh Slate Museum's "Car Gwyllt" - the incline rider used to descend the inclines by the men working at the Graig Ddu Quarry, Blaenau Ffestiniog. Other items of interest from the Museum's collection will also be on show including a "Ticad talu" for the Maenofferen Quarry (payment card) and an Oakeley Quarries rule book dating from 1945.

Mae'r lluniau o Fae Langland yn ymrannu'n ddau grwp: yn gyntaf, y golygfeydd o Draeth Bach y Forwyn (Bae Rotherslade heddiw), islaw'r Gwesty Osborne lle roedd y ddau yn aros; yn ail, nifer o ddarluniau o Graig Storr.
The Langland Bay pictures fall into two groups: firstly, views along the beach at Lady's Cove (now called Rotherslade Bay), overlooked by the Osborne Hotel, where he stayed; secondly, a number of paintings centred on Storr's Rock. He was fascinated by this enormous, isolated outcrop of rock close to the hotel and painted it at varying stages of the tide. This painting shows the north face of the rock at low tide on a sunny evening.

Yn y gweithdai hyn y gwnaed holl waith trwsio a chynnal a chadw chwarel a gyflogai dros 3,000 o ddynion. Atseiniai ponciau'r chwarel uwchlaw Gilfach Ddu yn sŷn y ffrwydriadau mawr a ryddhái'r llechi o'r graig.
These workshops catered for all the repair and maintenance work demanded by a quarry which, at its height, employed over 3,000 men. The quarry galleries high above Gilfach Ddu echoed to the sound of the great explosions that freed the slate from the rock.. Below, the workshops would ring with the music of hammer and anvil, mallet and chisel. Between them they supported an industry which exported thousands of tons of slates from Wales to the four corners of the world.

Mae hyn yn ddiddorol iawn. Gwnaed y jar yn ardal Bryniau Malvern yn Swydd Henffordd a Swydd Gaerwrangon rywbryd rhwng 300-50CC. Gwyddom o ble mae'n dod gan fod darnau bach o graig sy'n unigryw i'r ardal hon yn y clai.
The discovery of sherds of a decorated jar, with stamped comma-shaped designs below the rim, is of particular interest. The jar was made in the Malvern Hills of Herefordshire and Worcestershire some time between 300-50BC. We can tell its source from the small pieces of rock included in the clay, which only occur here.

A boy who got work at the quarry was said to have 'found work'; he began as a rubbler, carting the waste rock away from the bargain. On the other hand, the boy who was apprenticed at Gilfach Ddu was said to have have 'found a place'. The standard of the apprenticeship in these workshops was recognised by employers and shipping companies all over the world.

A beth am y graig na chafodd ei defnyddio i wneud y llechi gorau? Ers talwm byddai cloddio tunnell o lechi yn golygu creu cymaint ag ugain tunnell o wastraff. Ond heddiw defnyddir pob dim —i godi tai, yn friciau ac yn deils, i adeiladu ffyrdd ac —ar ffurf powdwr mân iawn —mewn nwyddau fel colur a phowdwr talcym.
But what about the rock not used to make the best slates? In the past, quarrying a ton of slate could yield as much as twenty tons of waste. But today everything is used – as bricks and tiles for houses, to build roads, and – in the form of very fine powder – in toiletries such as make-up and talcum powder. The slate industry might be closer to you than you think!

Darganfuwyd y ffosil nifer o flynyddoedd yn ôl, yn y creigiau ym Mhenarth, ger Caerdydd a chafodd Amgueddfa Cymru ef i'w arddangos yn gyhoeddus. I baratoi'r sbesimen ar gyfer ei arddangos, roedd angen oriau o waith manwl, gofalus i dynnu'r graig a oedd yn gorchuddio'r esgyrn ymlusgiad.
The fossil was discovered several years ago preserved in the cliffs at Penarth, near Cardiff and acquired by Amgueddfa Cymru for public display. To prepare the specimen for display, hours of delicate, skilled work had to be undertaken to carefully remove the rock covering the preserved reptile bones.

It should come as no surprise that the post of President, as interpreted in the Eisteddfod Caban, remains unpaid! However, the people who have volunteered to take part as Presidents are well known, have a good knowledge of the quarrying areas of Wales and have achieved recognition in society (see the programme and list below). Each discussion will be relevant to contemporary and past life in the quarrying areas. One thing that will not have changed is the serving of tea to quench the thirst that naturally arises through talking a lot. Tea, as history tells us, was the liquid that oiled the quarryman’s larynx.

Darnau o graig naturiol o'r gofod sy'n syrthio i'r ddaear yw gwibfeini. Wrth iddynt basio drwy'r atmosffer mae'r ffrithiant yn cynhesu'r haenau allanol gan achosi iddynt ddisgleirio'n llachar. Dyma sy'n gyfrifol am ffenomen y sêr gwib.
Meteorites are natural pieces of rock that fall to Earth from outer space. As they pass through the atmosphere, the outer layers are heated by friction, causing them to glow brightly and giving rise to the visual phenomena of a shooting star.

Mae rhai brasluniau olew yn darlunio safleoedd ac adeiladau enwog, tra bod rhai eraill yn canolbwyntio ar gorneli di-nod o fyd natur. Mae'r tirlun cynnar hwn yn darlunio Rhaeadr Henryd ger Coelbren lle mae Afon Llech yn disgyn 90 troedfedd dros graig ar ei ffordd i Afon Tawe.
Some landscape oil sketches depict famous sites and buildings, while others focus on unassuming corners of nature. This early landscape depicts the HenrydFalls, near Coelbren, where the River Llech plunges 90 feet over a cliff on its way to the Tawe. It is one of a group of landscapes probably from the Lamb and Flag inn Glyn-Neath. This was a convenient centre from which to explore the Vale and was described by William Weston Young in 1835 as 'a comfortable inn to refresh at...it is very prettily seated, and the views from it very fine'. The artist Penry Williams was originally from Merthyr Tydfil, but eventually settled in Rome. Here his brushstrokes are free, impulsive, and parts of the picture have been left unfinished. This suggests he worked quickly to capture the effect of water foaming over the falls.

These were industrial smiths, then, not farriers. The quarryman's tools were essential to him in his work, and a good quarry smith understood the differing needs of various quarrymen. This meant that he could make tools that met the needs of different men and different kinds of rock. One of the first tasks for an apprentice smith would be to forge his own tongs, pincers and swages.
