The first Welsh settlers in this area arrived from Cilcennin in Ceredigion in the year 1818. After a long and rough voyage lasting 7 weeks they arrived in Baltimore and hired wagons to carry them to Pittsburgh. There they bought an open boat and started down the River Ohio for Paddy's Run, without rudder, compass or sails. After rowing hard for days they arrived in Gallipolis, and for a number of reasons decided not to travel further.

The long list of churches established between 1835 and 1880 is very revealing about the attitude of the emigrants from Wales and their way of life. Religion was a central part of their everyday lives and it was with the gospel in their heart and their Bibles in their arms that many of them came to Ohio. They were dutiful to the religious tradition of their upbringing and after arriving in the new land the emigrants tried to continue that tradition.

At the beginning of the letter, we are given an account of the voyage: there is a description of the ship colliding with another ship, the "islands of ice" they saw, the method used to share the water at the beginning of the journey and how the food and water became scarce during the journey. Because of this shortage, they had to land in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to buy more supplies. At first these were simple wooden cabins, like this cabin that was built in Gallia County and which still exists today. Of course small structures like Tyn Rhos soon became too small for the congregation so they set about building larger churches. The 'new' Tyn Rhos was built a stone's throw away from the old cabin and grand churches for the use of the Welsh were built the length and breadth of Ohio in rural areas, towns and cities such as Cincinnati and Columbus.

This was the age of the industrial revolution that saw enormous ironworks and coalmines being developed to take advantage of the abundance of metal ores, fuel, water and limestone available in parts of Wales. The iron and coal owners became exceedingly rich, and at one stage The Dowlais Iron Company in Merthyr Tydfil was the biggest iron producer in the world, and its owner, Josiah John Guest employed more people than anyone else in the world. Side by side with the fantastic wealth of the industrial owners was the extreme poverty of the workers. In some industrial towns thousands of common people lived in poor overcrowded housing, worked long hours under dangerous conditions for low wages, and suffered from poverty and disease.

Virgil H. Evans, they needed a cow to feed the children but they didn't have enough money to buy on. But John managed to arrange to pay $7 for a good cow from a neighbor from the money he was about to earn working on a new canal in Logan county. But John fell ill with the dysentery within days in Logan and his brother-in-law borrowed a two-wheel cart to take him home and he died the following day. Another child was born to Mary and John seven months later but it did not live long and a short while afterwards their two-year old became ill with children's paralysis. Mary didn't have to pay back the $7 to her neighbor after that. Even though her circumstances improved slightly after remarrying, she had quite a hard life and apparently she used to walk 15 miles from her home to Gallipolis with a basket of eggs on her head to sell in the market there when she was an old woman. She was 71 years old when she died.
