There are times when artists reveal their most precious secrets. An interesting anecdote in the Florentine sculptor Benvenuto Cellini's memoirs describes his rivalry with the painting of his countryman Francesco Primaticcio at the court of Francis I Subjected to his rival's intrigues and machinations during his sojourn in Paris from 1540-45, he saw himself forced one evening to present his sculpture Jupiter, which he had just completed, in the unfavorable twilight of approaching nightfall. Yet Cellini turned the situation to his advantage: "when night came, I set fire to the torch, which standing higher than the head of Jupiter, shed light from above and showed the statue far better than by daytime." Cellini understood how to manipulate the flickering candlelight to intensify the effect of his work: "When the King appeared, I made my apprentice Ascanio push the Jupiter toward his Majesty. As it moved smoothly forwards, my cunning in its turn was amply rewarded, for this gentle motion made the figure seem alive."

Luigi Boccherini was born in 1743 in Lucca. He started to learn to play cello at an early age under the guidance of his father, a double bass player who had also some knowledge of the cello. Later he studied cello at the local seminary under Abbot Domenico Vannucci and at the age of 12 started to give solo performances in his native town and eventually got a job in the town theater orchestra. In 1757 he graduated from the music faculty of the seminary and, striving to improve his skills, went to Rome where he spent about a year visiting concerts and honing his cello playing skills on his own. In Rome he did not miss a chance to go to concerts of such celebrities of the time as Tartini, Giardini, Pugniani, Constanzi and others who indubitably enriched the young musician’s outlook, endowed him with experience and influenced his style. In 1769, after successfully touring Spain, France and Germany, he was invited to the post of “composer-virtuoso” to the court of the King of Spain’s brother in Madrid where he stayed until 1789. After that Boccherini worked as “chamber-composer” in Berlin and returned to Madrid only in 1797 where he lived until his last day. The acclaimed musician died on May 28, 1805.

The truth of the matter was reported in the more obscure pages of the British Medical Journal for 1883 (1:28), where it was pointed out that it was simply a rare case of hypertrichosis universalis. Far from having lived a wild life in the jungles, Krao's mother was actually employed at the court of the King of Laos, while Krao herself was a very intelligent child who became fluent in English, French and German.

Einen Großteil seines Lebens verbrachte Tinctoris in Neapel. Dorthin kam er in den 1470er Jahren und war als Sänger und Kaplan am

König Ferdinands I. angestellt.

Tinctoris spent a large part of his life in Naples. He went there in the 1470s and was employed as a singer and chaplain at the court of Ferdinand I. Apart from that, what we know is that he stayed in Ferrara (May 1479), sought to recruit new singers for the court (1487), petitioned the Pope to bestow upon him a doctorate in canonical and civil law (1490), and had a stay in Rome (1502). It is unclear when Tinctoris finally left the Aragonese court. He possibly visited a former pupil of his, Beatrice of Aragón, daughter of Ferdinand I and Queen of Hungary, in Buda in 1493. In Nivelles, near his place of birth, he held the post of canon. Since payments related to this position ended each October, at which time a new canon was appointed, 1511 has been accepted as Tinctoris's year of death.

Ecgfrid, Oswiu's youngest son and, later, heir to the throne, had lived as a hostage at Penda's court, where, most likely, he became acquainted with pagan Germanic practices. Just at that time Benedict Biscop, the founder of the twin monasteries Wearmouth and Jarrow, and his then friend Wilfrid, later bishop at Hexham, went on their first journey to Rome, which was to be followed by a number more. They returned not only with numerous precious manuscripts and religious artefacts (among them many worthless relics, plain fraud) but also with some Roman clergymen, among them the arch preceptor of Rome's St. Peter, John, as well as craftsmen from Gaul, such as stone masons, cementarii, and glass-blowers. It may be due to the preceptor's influence that along with the Gregorian chant Roman rites and monastic customs influenced Celtic monasteries.

In Germany, the first compositions for the traverse flute appear around 1720, 25 years later than in France at the court of Louis XIV. The first sonatas are rearrangements of Händel oboe sonatas, published in Amsterdam. 1725 followed the Bach partita (high A plays perfectly well on the weitmensurierte flute in low pitch), it was probably written for Buffardin who was a flute soloist in the Dresden court orchestra. The French musicians were employed at many German and British courts, and the French court was “en vogue” in all of Europe. Telemann fantasias 1728. Bach sonatas after 1730.

Bach kept close personal relations to Gotha through Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel. In 1747, Stölzel bought a copy of Bach’s ‘The Musical Offering’ for Gotha’s court chapel. A remarkable purchase that proves that contemporary music was played at the court.

The Spanish Conquistadors of the 16th century were also interested in chocolate. In 1528, Cortez took the first cocoa to Spain, along with the equipment needed to prepare the exotic drink, and it soon met with great approval in the Spanish court. In 1615, the infanta Anna of Austria, who grew up in Madrid, introduced drinking chocolate to the French court when she married King Louis XIII. In Paris it became a badge of status and the fashionable drink of the aristocracy, and from there it spread throughout the whole of Europe. Whereas in the 19th century, the importance of drinking chocolate declined, solid chocolate, which had its origins in France in the years following 1830, grew in importance.
