In this case series, the development and successful treatment of pulmonary edema aredescribed in two obese animals (a horse and a dog) in the postoperative period. This rare butsevere complication is normally fairly easy to diagnose, but the cause is usually multifactorialand difficult to determine. Potentially contributing factors are discussed. Both animals respondedsuccessfully to therapy and were discharged without further incidents.

This article contains two separate case reports of the isolation of Aujeszky’s disease virus (ADV) from ahunting dog. Each of the two dogs developed neurological symptoms and died of ADV within five days afterhunting on wild boars in the Ardennes. Because ADV has been eradicated in the domesticated pig population,it was hypothesized that wild boars infected with ADV were the source, since one of the dogs was fed with theintestines of shot wild boars, and the other was fed with the intestines and other organs.

When used in combination with specific radioactive markers, functional imaging modalities such as SinglePhoton Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) enable thevisualization of several neurotransmitter receptors and transporters, as well as of the perfusion andmetabolism of the brain. This paper gives an overview of the functional imaging techniques, as well as of the studies that have beenperformed on humans and canines with anxiety disorders. Thus far, most of the research in this field has beenfocused on brain perfusion and the serotonergic and dopaminergic neurotransmitters, and less on gammaaminobutyricacid (GABA), glutamate, norepinephrine and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Several techniques have been developed to extract teeth in different animal species regularly seen inveterinary practice. Many of these techniques have a lot of similarities with human extraction techniques, whereas others are species specific. Overall, they can be divided into simple or closed extractions, andsurgical extraction techniques. Simple extractions involve the removal of teeth or root fragments using anintra-oral approach and without exposing or removing alveolar bone. More complex intra- or extra-oralapproaches and surgical techniques are used during surgical extractions. This paper reviews the currentconcepts of the different methods for removing teeth in horses, dogs, cats, lagomorphs and rodents, andcompares them with human exodontic procedures.

Disc associated Wobbler syndrome (DAWS) is the most prevalent and most typical Wobbler syndrome indogs. It is typically seen in the middle-aged Dobermann Pinscher. Caudal cervical spinal cord compressionis caused by protrusion of the annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc into the spinal canal, sometimes incombination with ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and malformed vertebrae. Clinical signs vary from neckpain to tetraplegia. The diagnosis is generally made using myelography. There is a lot of controversyconcerning the treatment of this disease. Many surgical techniques have been developed for it, but little isknown about the conservative treatment. Objective data about the prognosis of this disease is scarce.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common congenital heart disorders in dogs. If thecondition is not corrected, more than half of the affected dogs die within their first year of life. Closureof the PDA by occlusion or ligation is therefore recommended and has a good long-term prognosis. Themain complication of the non-invasive techniques is embolism, whereas bleeding after rupture of theductus or an adjacent blood vessel is the most common problem with ligation. Two cases of PDA are discussed. In the first dog, the PDA was successfully corrected surgically. Inthe second case, however, serious bleeding occurred at several occasions during the surgery due to theexceptional presence of a persistent fifth aortic arch (PFAA). Intraoperative euthanasia was performed.

This case report describes the occurrence of clinically significant osteochondrosis of the seventh lumbarvertebra in a 10-year-old, female Beagle with progressive monoparesis, lumbosacral pain and urinaryincontinence.A presumptive diagnosis was made using radiography and computed tomography. The dog wassurgically treated by a dorsal laminectomy and the detached bone fragment was removed. A postoperativecomputed tomography scan demonstrated the complete removal of the osteochondrotic tissue. Although thedog recovered remarkably after surgery, she developed a clinical relapse after several weeks. The ownersdeclined further diagnostic tests and the dog was euthanized. Histopathological examination of the removedtissue was in agreement with a diagnosis of osteochondrosis of the seventh lumbar vertebra.
