Some seven years later a group of prominent scientists from around the world came together to found the International AIDS Society (IAS) – an organisation which would organise international conferences on AIDS bringing together scientists, activists, researchers, people living with HIV and others working on AIDS issues to share knowledge and experiences in responding to the epidemic.

En 1981 se detectaron los primeros casos de fallos atípicos del sistema inmunitario entre hombres homosexuales, mujeres y consumidores de drogas inyectables.
