"Nanotechnology is becoming increasingly important, be it in the areas of health, medical technology, neurosciences, information and communication technologies, energy systems or sustainability – and particularly at their interfaces."

The concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) provides a vision of the Information Society where the emphasis is on user-friendliness, efficient and distributed services support, user-empowerment, and support for human interactions. People are surrounded by intelligent intuitive interfaces that are embedded in all kinds of objects and an environment that is capable of recognizing and responding to the presence of different individuals in a seamless, unobtrusive and often invisible way. This vision of AmI places the user at the centre of future development. Technologies will be designed for people rather than making people adapt to technologies.

Currently, lines of development are emerging in various scientific disciplines and fields of technology which could be combined to achieve a major reorientation of medicine in the direction of “individual medicine” This refers to medicine which, to a much greater extent than in the past, is directed at an individual and the individual set of factors influencing their personal health. The hope is for “individual medicine” which enhances the tolerance, efficacy and efficiency of preventive and therapeutic interventions, avoids unnecessary spending on health care and enables development of innovative preventive and therapeutic measures. Lines of development within “individual medicine” include e. g.:

The City of Regensburg has considerable potentials in science and industry as well as in the field of technology and innovation. Alongside a competitive and innovative regional economy, which has close links to companies like Conti, Osram and Infineon, the University of Regensburg and the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences represent the main structural elements in the public sector which are to be further strengthened in the future. Besides the University of Regensburg, which is already quite sizeable with around 16,000 students at present and the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences (7,000 students), the regional research and innovation system is supplemented by technology-based infrastructure facilities like the BioPark, the Strategic Cluster Sensors and the information and communication business start-up centre. One feature which should certainly be highlighted as a supportive one in this context is the campus situation, which is the only one in Bavaria, and which not only brings together important actors in close spatial proximity – such as the two universities for example - but also represents an important basic prerequisite for the formation and development of cluster and technology parks from the viewpoint of networking and knowledge/technology transfer.
