In Shahzia Sikander's Big Dog Series, headless robotic dogs, fashioned after U.S. military drones in Afghanistan, chase wildly through the legs of a Sumo wrestler. Lifting a cow with his bare hands, the wrestler looks back at a plump goddess wielding a megaphone. This trumped up version of a classic hunt or battle scene, so familiar to us from paintings by Rubens and Delacroix or Persian miniature painting, is just one example of how Sikander conjoins the often separate worlds of East and West.

99 Wolves surge through the exhibition space, headed for a glass wall; a video screen shows a house exploding in colorful cascades of fireworks; on a huge gunpowder drawing, the silhouette of a pack of wolves traces a gigantic spiral. Cai Guo-Qiang’s Head On, commissioned for Deutsche Bank, was conceived especially for the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. In his three-part installation, the Chinese art star reflects on the history and present of the German capital. Journalists’ reactions to Cai’s work have been ambivalent – while they seem fascinated by the work’s aesthetic, its symbolic content nonetheless remains somewhat of a mystery.

Speeding past apartment buildings, containers, ghetto bars, bank machines, and miniature Brancusis and Calders in the sculpture park, exhibition visitors bit by the game bug can drive their car through Nutsy's cosmos, catching their breath for a moment, perhaps, at the McDonald's drive-in. Indeed, this urge to play was what inspired the idea that gave rise to this installation, which is made on a scale of 1:25 and copies its models from real life down to every last detail. Yet then Sachs "started thinking about what our lives are like, and the themes that are interesting to me are how the world's fed… McDonald's, planned obsolescence, global housing… Corbusier, music. So I thought, 'What's our "GTA" (Grand Theft Auto)? What's our mission here?' And we started combining these things."
