  Antanas Strazdas : Gies...
Antano Strazdo ,,Giesmės svietiškos ir šventos", išleistos Vilniuje 1814m., yra pirmas originalių lietuviškų eilėraščių rinkinys. Tai lietuvių pasaulietinės poezijos pradžia. Nors K.Donelaičio "Metai" parašyti anksčiau (XVIIIa. 7-ame dešimtmetyje), bet išspausdinti jie buvo Karaliaučiuje tiktai 1818 m.- taigi praėjus ketveriems metams po A. Strazdo rinkinio pasirodymo. A.Strazdo ,,Giesmės…" ir K.Donelaičio ,,Metai" - visos Lietuvių grožinės literatūros ištakos.
"The Songs, Worldly and Saint" by Antanas Strazdas, that were published in Vilnius in 1814, is the first selection of original Lithuanian poetry. It marks the beginning of Lithuanian secular poetry. Though "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis were written earlier (in the 7th decade of the 18th century), they were published in Königsberg in 1818, i.e. four years after "The Songs..." by Strazdas. "The Songs..." by Strazdas and "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis are at the sources of all Lithuanian fiction.
  Juozas Tumas - Vaižgant...
Apysakoje ir vaizduojami tokie žmonės: Mykoliukas, Severiutė ir Rapolas. Įstatyti į primityvias baudžiavinio kaimo aplinkybes, jie sugeba jausti, stebėti ir suvokti save, patirti aukščiausias būties akimirkas.
The highest peak of Vaižgantas creative work is a story "Uncles and Aunts" published in 1929. The depicted period transfers a reader to the times when serfdom was coming to an end and was abolished at last. However, the story focuses the attention not on the images of serfdom or the problems of changing social and cultural life, but on the inner world of a human being, on the depth of characters, their links with the nature and the world, on their world view. The work shows a sad fate of the luckless members of the family. According to Vaižgantas, the terms "uncles and aunts" expresses not the family relations, but the social links between the owners who have inherited the farm and the family members who have stayed in it to work and life a poor life. Their situation is mixed in between a servant, an employee and a member of the family. This position is harder than that of an employee, because they work without payment, most often for the food and modest cloths. The story is about these people: Mykoliukas, Severiutė, and Rapolas. Living in the midst of a serfs village they are able to feel and observe, to be self-conscious, to experience the highest moments of existence. The subtlety of their inner feelings is embedded in the constant flow of work, relations, and traditions, is interwoven in everyday conversations, habitual actions, ritual gestures, that acquire a special meaning imperceptibly.

"The Seasons" by K.Donelaitis is an epic poem of the Lithuanians from Lithuania Minor. This epic poem, as usual for this genre, embraces the whole life of the nation. The nation is represented by peasants in the poem. They are depicted according to the cyclic understanding of time, history, and life. The relations of a human being (a peasant) with the nature and the God are disclosed, as well as the relations among the people, the peasants and the landlords. The author reveals the way of life of the peasants, their traditions, work and festivals. The life of peasants goes in circles as the nature does, and is determined by the same laws of the God. In nature, the summer comes after the spring and is followed by the autumn and at last winter, and everything starts from the beginning again. A human being is born, matures, gives fruit and dies as a plant. The peasants are reborn with the miracle of the spring, in summer they work hard, in autumn collect the harvest given by nature, in winter think of their destiny and prepare for the following spring the new cycle of the year and peasant's work. The peasants are praised and scolded, encouraged and restricted according to the norms of Christian morality, their life and behaviour is evaluated according to the truths of the Holy Scripture. The main merits of human beings are laboriousness, piousness, truthfulness, faithfulness to traditions and customs of the nation; the greatest vices are laziness, irreverence, cruelty, acceptance of alien fashions and habits. K.Donelaitis by his work aspired to reinforce the moral values developed by the nation through ages, to uproot vices, to develop spiritual resistance of the nation.

Lygindamas Donelaičio kūrinį su plačiu literatūros kontekstu (antikiniais ir naujųjų laikų autoriais), L.Rėza pabrėžia "Metų" originalumą, laiko juos lietuvių kalbos, papročių, dvasinės kultūros ir buities nesenstančiu paminklu, prilygstančiu kitų tautų (slavų, germanų, keltų) klasikiniams literatūros paminklams. Juolab reikšmingi "Metai" lietuvių tautai - jie padeda tvirtą pagrindą originaliajai lietuvių literatūrai.
This article was the first study of K. Donelaitis life, personality, and creative work. It was a foundation to the later studies of Donelaitis works. The main problems related to Donelaitis were outlined and briefly discussed in the article. L.Rėza had compared the work by Donelaitis with a wide literary context (antique and modern writers) and emphasized the originality of "The Seasons". He had described it as an immortal monument to Lithuanian language, custom, spiritual culture and way of life, that was equal to classic literary works of other nations (Slavic, Germanic, Celtic). "The Seasons" had a great importance to Lithuanians - it had become a fundament to all original Lithuanian literature. L.Rėza had described K. Donelaitis as a genius of the nation, the first Lithuanian poet who aspired to reach "the kingdom of truth and beauty" on the "wings of the genius". L.Rėza had disclosed the closeness to the people and simplicity of "The Seasons"; discussed the genre, composition, metrics of the work and art of translation; revealed the unusual richness of the poetic language of Donelaitis. L.Rėza met people who had known K. Donelaitis personally and gathered important facts about the life of Donelaitis, noble features of his personality, diversity of his talents, and evidence of his artistic gift.
