From January the 1st the Department of Bionanoscience has extended with three new high-profile tenure track assistant professors: Elio Abbondanzieri, Chirlmin Joo and Anne Meyer.

Anne Meyer, working on stress response of cells, received her doctoral degree in Dr. J. Frydman''s lab (Stanford University) and was a postdoc in Dr. T. Baker''s lab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Chirlmin Joo studied Physics at Seoul National University and graduated in 2002. He then went to the United States and in 2007 was awarded a PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has worked for TU Delft's BioNanoScience department since 2011 and is presently assistant professor there.

Chirlmin Joo studeerde Natuurkunde aan Seoul National University (2002). Daarna ging hij naar de Verenigde Staten en promoveerde in 2007 aan de University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Sinds 2011 is hij verbonden aan Afdeling BioNanoScience van de TU Delft. Hij is daar Universitair Docent.

The Department of Bionanoscience, which carries out research at the interface between nanotechnology and biology, has increased its staff numbers from three to seven (Cees Dekker, Nynke Dekker, Juan Keymer, Sander Tans, David Grünwald, Christophe Danelon and Bertus Beaumont) and from 1 January 2011 another three new tenure-trackers will start (Chirlmin Joo, Anne Meyer and Elio Abbondanzieri).

A key role in this process is reserved for the RISC protein complex. Joo plans to use his ERC Starting Grant to shed more light on this complex. To date it has proven difficult to accurately study RISC.

MicroRNA is een klein regulerend stukje RNA dat het zogenaamde boodschapper-RNA controleert. Dit microRNA kan slim worden ingezet voor gentherapie. Een centrale rol in dit alles speelt het eiwitcomplex RISC. Joo wil met deze ERC Starting Grant meer licht werpen op dit complex. Tot nu toe is het namelijk moeilijk gebleken om RISC nauwkeurig te bestuderen.
