Kosovo switched off the mobile phone networks of several telecommunications providers last weekend, saying they lacked an official licence for their operations. Telekom Srbija, the Serbian telecommunications company, was among those affected. This was a childish move of symbolic significance, writes the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera: "Every now and then some governments act like children. The most recent clash between Serbia and Kosovo consists of a series of naughty pranks. If the dispute hadn't flared up near Sarajevo and eleven years after the Nato bombing it would almost be laughable. After the religious wars, the wars of independence, the civil wars and the hundred-year wars of the past centuries here we are in the 21st century facing the telephone war. … Just like children want to show their peers that they're bigger and more entitled to power and respect, the telephone dispute is mostly of a symbolic character. … By the end of the year the International Court of Justice will have to rule on Serbia's objection to Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence."
