Lord and Sproxton invited me to come to work with them when I was in the middle of the film, which helped me a lot. Their quality is seen also from the fact that there was nobody else I wanted to work for really. They are particularly good at nurturing young directors because they offer not just the umbrella of the production company and the facilities, butthey make you better. They are very good in being critical of what you are working on, but also encouraging, fostering creativity and constructiveness. Aardman is an exceptionally creative environment with a team of outstanding authors. All this finally helps you to make a better film. The festival slogan Z… is for Zagreb, designed by film scientist and critic Ron Holloway, says a lot about the connection between Zagreb and Animafest – the connection making both the city and the festival recognisable all across the globe. Taking place at numerous locations, from the central Europa theatre which took over the role previously played by the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, to Cineplexx Kaptol Centre, Tuškanac, to museums and galleries, to local cultural centres, Animafest breathes with the city where it was born.

The Animafest Council announced the winners of Animafest Zagreb 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award and Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies. Animafest Council consisting of Darko Kreč (President), Vesna Dovniković, Pavao Štalter, Nikica Gilić, Marko Meštrović, Žaljko Sarić and Milan Blažeković, decided to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to one of the world’s most famous animators - Yuri Norstein, whereas the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies goes to the producer, director, film theorist, critic and current Artistic Director of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival - Marcel Jean. Both awards will be given and presented at the festival opening ceremony on 3 June 2014.

Produced at the Laputa little school for art animation, where Kuri teaches since its start, this documentary retraces the life and works of this major figure in world animation history. From his childhood and debuts as a cartoonist to nowadays, a whole life of creation, laughter, graphical nonsense and bright, happy Eros. We follow Kuri during the one week making of a new short film, Gramophone(2008), as homage to Emile Cohl’s Fantoche. Also includes several films and excerpts, a lot of historical documents, and testimonies of many Japanese animators and critics.

Fernando Trueba (1955) is is a multi-award-winning writer, director and producer, with a career spanning more than three decades in film, television, documentaries, theatre and music. Among other awards, he has won both Oscar and BAFTA for Foreign Language Film with Belle Époque (1993), and a Silver Bear for Year of Enlightenment at the 37th Berlinale. Branka Benčić is an independent curator. She founded Cinemaniac/Think Film at Pula Film Festival in Croatia, exhibition series and research platform for artist film and video (since 2002); Artists’ Cinema series at the Museum of Contemporary art in Zagreb (since 2012), and she is artistic director at Apoteka Space for Contemporary Art. Some of her exhibitions are Paper Movies - Collage and Film (2014); Think Film (2013); Invisible MAFAF and alternative film practices in ex Yugoslavia (2010); Architecture and Cinema (2009); Babette Mangolte, films and photography (2008). As an independent curator she has curated exhibitions and screening programs in Croatia and internationally including: Damir Očko - Studies on Shivering (Künstlerhaus KM–, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz, 2014), Notes on Undoing (Garis&Hahn, New York, 2014); Video Television Anticipation (Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, 2013, with A. Sekulić); Strategies of self-representation in Croatian video art since 1970s (Marseille, 2012), Clueless Geometry of Misunderstanding (Torino, 2010). She holds MA in History of Art and MA in Comparative literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Branka Benčić delivered talks and lectures on contemporary art and exhibiting film/video at Tate Modern London, RU New York, MSU Zagreb, MoCA Belgrade, Halle für Kunst, Lüneburg, KM Graz, and publishes regularly on contemporary art and film/video in exhibition catalogues, books and journals. She served as a jury member at several festival and events such as Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, YVAA - Radoslav Putar Award, 25 FPS Festival Zagreb, KulturKontakt Vienna.
