This question of “how to protect future generations”, we could assume that everyone, the agency and the artists, would interpret it in the same way.  We live in the same country, speak the same language, share the same values. Upon consideration, however, we could ask ourselves if we were approaching the question from the same angle.  “Practising artists” perceive “art” as their absolute imperative. Art was difficult to define, but it was both the cause and the effect, both the driving force and the result, and serves only itself.   The artist’s ethics can therefore only be deontological: he creates what he must create, consciously, and without worrying about the consequences.  On the other hand, the issues raised by Andra reveal a “consequential” ethical theory. It is a case of “not making future generations bear the consequences of today’s choice’s”. In other words, a sort of prospective selflessness which aims to minimise the potentially detrimental effects of an action without giving any prior thought to the action’s legitimate deontology – or rather, setting aside this deontological thought since the action was clearly required by the reason of State: the ethical reflection can therefore only focus on the consequences of this initial and irreversible decision.  This meant that we could then ask ourselves if the differences in these two approaches would inevitably cause a divide between two types of ethics, or even between two absolute reasons – that of Art and that of State – whereby the latter could, rightly or wrongly, be considered as using the former in an attempt to integrate a deontological dimension that was, by defition, denied to it.

EPFL and its teachers strongly encourage these research periods abroad. They constitute an almost inevitable step in a scientific career, are practically essential in becoming a professor, and a major asset in being selected for important positions. The likelihood of becoming a professor is greater for someone who has benefited from a grant. In a recent study, the EPFL Research Commission has observed that 17% of post-doctoral scholarship students began an academic career, but that only 23% of them came back to Switzerland to pursue it. We might therefore wonder: what is the benefit for a university such as EPFL to see its best people leave? This question of brain drain versus brain gain has been assessed in depth both at EPFL and the FNS, and the two institutions have reached the conclusion that the benefits of this type of sponsorship is extremely positive, and contributes to increasing the visibility of Switzerland internationally. FNS scholarship students are ambassadors for EPFL worldwide: they increase the institutions renown, and stimulate other researchers to come to study or work in Switzerland. Knowledge is on the move, is no longer limited to domestic borders, and enriches exchanges between researchers. It’s thus by emphasizing openness that institutions such as EPFL encourage scientific careers and guarantee that there is a continued supply of scientists.

His artistic practice develops, in the first instance, from his computer. Fascinated by the Internet browser, the artist compares the system of nested hypertext links to a form of film or video editing. The aim of his work could therefore be summed up in this question : how can one make information more tangible (images as jpeg, pdf documents, etc..). Which, as well as visually present on the screen computer, finally remains virtual and intangible operating in the mind of the user as many ambiguous concepts with more or less floating status. This question, underlying all the work of the artist, involves the use of technologies that are prior to the emergence of internet, enabling to give substance to previous computer investigations. From this reflexion, formally heterogeneous works emerge which fragile and romantic appearance clashes with the rational and pragmatic vision that one would expect of a hypertext navigation.

En conclusion, l'échange d'informations entre le médecin et le pharmacien doit toujours être justifié par le critère de la nécessité, et il ne peut dès lors se concevoir que l'information au sujet de l'indication soit donnée au pharmacien non pas pour lui permettre de remplir sa mission, mais à la seule fin qu'il la retranscrive sur un emballage afin de permettre à d'autres personnes d'en avoir connaissance.
