On 26 May, 2009 the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) decided to add 22 new sites from 17 countries to the UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) which now counts 553 sites in 107 countries.

Über fünftausend Schüler und Umweltaktivisten haben sich am 17. Mai 2009 am Strand von St. Kilda/ Melbourne zu einem riesigen Schriftzug mit der Aufforderung an die australische Regierung "Climate change - our future is in your hands" formiert. Mit der Aktion sollte darauf aufmerksam gemacht werden, dass es beim Klimawandel um die Zukunft der jungen Generation geht.

The reserves were identified as such in the UNESCO programme "Man and Biospheres" (MAB). The key goal is to create a global network of reserves for the conservation and sustainable use of the natural world in large representative sections of natural and cultivated landscapes.

Die Reservate wurden im Rahmen des UNESCO-Programms "Der Mensch und die Biosphäre" (MAB) anerkannt. Wesentliches Ziel ist die Schaffung eines Weltnetzes der Bioreservate zum Schutz und zur nachhaltigen Nutzung der natürlichen Ressourcen und zum Schutz des Naturhaushaltes in großflächigen repräsentativen Ausschnitten von Natur- und Kulturlandschaften. Des Weiteren sind die Erforschung der Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehung und ökologische Umweltbeobachtungen ein Ziel, ebenso Umweltbildung durch Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.

40 years ago, in 1971, the ICC assembled for its first session. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the MAB programme, Germany’s environment minister invited the ICC to Germany. It is the first time that the ICC session took place in Germany.

Die 23. Sitzung der Internationalen Koordinierungsrat (ICC) des UNESCO-Programms "Der Mensch und die Biosphäre" fand in Dresden Radebeul vom 28. Juni bis 1. Juli 2011 statt. Vor 40 Jahren, im Jahr 1971, tagte der ICC zum ersten Mal. Zum 40-jährigen Jubiläum des Programms hatte der Bundesumweltminister den ICC nach Deutschland eingeladen, der ICC tagt erstmals in Deutschland. Der Internationale Koordinierungsrat des MAB-Programms hat am 30. Juni 18 Regionen als neue Biosphärenreservate anerkannt. Das Netz umfasst damit derzeit 581 Biosphärenreservate in 114 Ländern.
