Marrakech was founded in the eleventh century by the Almoravids. It was they who made it one of the most important commercial and cultural centres of Maghreb, which is on the doorstep of one of the biggest deserts on the planet: the Sahara. Its most emblematic monument is certainly the Koutoubia, a vast mosque erected in the 12th century. The 20km ramparts surrounding the medina are also worth a visit.
