Depuis la fin de la Guerre froide l’Italie accueille de nombreux immigrants venant surtout du Maghreb et des Balkans. Actuellement environ 6 p. cent de la population est non-italienne. À noter qu’un immigrant non européen doit résider en Italie pendant au moins 10 ans s’il souhaite obtenir la citoyenneté italienne, et pouvoir accéder à des postes à la fonction publique italienne.

Since the end of the Cold War Italy has been welcoming many immigrants, especially from North Africa and the Balkans. Currently about 6% of the population is non-Italian. Note that a non-European immigrant must live in Italy for at least ten years if he wishes to be granted Italian citizenship and to be able to accede to positions in the public service. Since immigrants to Italy are often poorly educated and rarely speak the local language (this is vastly different from the case in Canada), sometimes tensions arise between Italians and non-Europeans in the suburbs of well-to-do industrial cities like Treviso, Vicenza, Rome, or Milan.

She has also served in a number of other senior positions at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, including Director General for the Middle East and Maghreb (2008-2009), for Afghanistan (2006-2008), and for Public Diplomacy and Federal-Provincial Affairs (2006-2007), and Director for Human Rights (2000-2001). She was posted to the Canadian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York (1994-1996).
