In the basin in which Val Passiria, Val Venosta and Val d’Ultimo meet, there is the city of Merano, which has been a renowned spa town already in the 19th century. In Roman times the settlement “castrum maiense” has been built, which later on continued existing as Maia.

Im Talkessel, in dem das Passeiertal, der Vinschgau und das Ultental zusammenkommen liegt Meran. In Römerzeiten war hier bereits die Siedlung “castrum maiense” bekannt, welche später als Mais fortlebte. Meran selbst wurde zum ersten Mal im Jahre 857 als Mairania erwähnt und wurde im 13. Jahrhundert zur Stadt erhoben. Heute besteht Meran aus den Stadtteilen Gratsch, Obermais, Untermais, Labers und Sinich - und der Meraner Altstadt mit den mittelalterlichen Lauben und Shopping-Arkaden.

Già nel 19° secolo Merano fu nota come città di cura, anche oltre i confini. Nell’età Romana fu costruito l’insediamento “castrum maiense”, mentre Merano stessa fu menzionata per la prima volta nel 857 come Mairania e fu eretta a città nel 13° secolo. Oggi i quartieri della città sono Maia Bassa, Maia Alta, Quarazze, Labers, Sinigo, come anche il centro storico con i portici medievali e vari negozi.
