By adding a fourth malting plant to the Antwerp site, Boortmalt is strengthening its export capacity and capability. An R&D centre will also be established so that customers can benefit from the company’s innovation agenda. Consequently, not only is the Antwerp site set to become the world’s largest malt production facility, it will also be the home of the company’s Research & Development centre and a multi-modal transport hub for malt exports with the logistical capability to package and store the company’s full range of products in bags, bulk bags, bulk and containers.

Rudy : ‘J’ai commencé à travailler chez Boortmalt en 1983. Il s’agissait alors d’une petite entreprise familiale, située à proximité de l’église de Boortmeerbeek (Belgique). J’y ai occupé de très nombreuses fonctions : opérateur, chef d’équipe, contremaître de production.

Rudy : ‘I started working at Boortmalt in 1983. At the time, it was still a small family owned and run company, situated next to the church in Boortmeerbeek (Belgium). I have had a wonderful career: operator, foreman, production team leader, then moving to the plant in Antwerp as production and quality supervisor … I have run the gamut of experience. And from 2006 to the day I retired I oversaw the qualitative conversion of barley to malt as production manager.’

Comme la production de malt requiert une quantité non négligeable d’eau potable, tous nos sites ont été équipés de systèmes de purification de l’eau. Alors que le maltage traditionnel requiert plus de 5 mètres cube d’eau pour produire une seule tonne de malt et bien que le volume soit limité à 4 mètres cube par tonne, Boortmalt produit actuellement une tonne de malt avec moins de 3 mètres cube d’eau.

Because malt production requires a substantial amount of drinking quality water, all of our facilities have been equipped with water purification systems. Whereas traditional malting required more than 5 cubic meters of water to produce a single ton of malt, and although limited to 4 cubic meters per ton, Boortmalt currently produces a ton of malt with less than 3 cubic meters of water.

Barley growers in France, the UK and Ireland produce some of the best quality malting barley within the EU adhering to all recognised environmental and food safety standards. They employ state-of-the-art technologies such as satellite monitoring (Farmstar) and precision farming to optimise seeding rate, fertiliser application and crop protection. The barley breeders who in turn supply the growers with seed continuously develop and perfect new varieties to further improve the quality of malting barley and agronomic sustainability. All field practices are recorded within computer systems at every stage of production providing full traceability from the field to the finished malt. In Central and Eastern Europe, Boortmalt also controls seed and barley production through a subsidiary of Axereal.
