When children are repeatedly victimized by cyberbullying over time, they may develop physical symptoms, like headaches and eating disorders, as well as psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety and loss of self-esteem. They may also experience difficulties at school, problems with relationships and aggressive behaviour. Bullying can also place victims at a higher risk of self-harm or becoming suicidal. Although cyberbullying and bullying incidents may be time-limited, in some cases the negative consequences may persist, even lasting into adulthood. It is important to equip children with skills and tools to create and maintain healthy and helpful online relationships. Be sure to talk to children about cyber-bullying, and to let them know what it is, what to do about it if it happens and that they can come to you any time about an incident involving them or someone they know. At the same time, make sure they understand the types of behaviors that are considered bullying – and that it is inappropriate for them to be a bully.
