La présidente Mme Calmy Rey a rendu hommage, dans son discours, au courage de ces jeunes gens, soulignant que beaucoup ont payé cher leur engagement et précisant à titre d’encouragement qu’en changeant le monde arabe, ils changeaient le monde.

In her speech, the President of the Confederation praised the courage of these young people in the knowledge that many of them had paid a high price for their commitment. She also gave them the following words of encouragement: “By changing the Arab world, you are changing the whole world”. For too long, she argued, the West – including Europe – had relied on dictatorial regimes to preserve stability in the region. She put forward the view that this historical turning point required a transformation in the EU’s and Switzerland's relationship with these countries, a relationship which in the future would need to be infused with the spirit of partnership. In March this year, the Federal Council formulated a strategy for North Africa and the Middle East based on three pillars, which Ambassador Claude Wild, head of Political Affairs Division IV, outlined at the conference: democratisation and human rights, economic development, and protection and migration.

Bundespräsidentin Micheline Calmy-Rey würdigte in ihrer Rede den Mut der jungen Menschen im Wissen darum, dass viele von ihnen für ihr Engagement einen hohen Preis bezahlten und ermutigte sie unter anderem mit den Worten: „Indem ihr die arabische Welt verändert, verändert ihr die Welt.“ Zu lange habe der Westen, auch Europa, zur Sicherung der Stabilität in der Region auf diktatorische Regimes gesetzt. Der historische Wendepunkt bedeute deshalb auch eine Wende für die Beziehung von Europa und der Schweiz zu diesen Ländern, eine Beziehung, die inskünftig von einem partnerschaftlichen Geist geprägt sein müsse. Bereits im letzten März formulierte der Bundesrat eine Strategie zu Nordafrika und dem Mittleren Osten, die auf drei Pfeilern basiert, wie Botschafter Claude Wild, Chef der Politischen Abteilung IV, darlegte: Demokratisierung und Menschenrechte, ökonomische Entwicklung sowie Schutz und Migration.

Nella sua relazione, la presidente della Confederazione Micheline Calmy-Rey ha elogiato il coraggio dei giovani, molti dei quali hanno pagato il loro impegno a caro prezzo, e ha ricordato loro che con i cambiamenti realizzati nel mondo arabo essi cambieranno il mondo intero. L’Occidente e anche l’Europa hanno assecondato troppo a lungo i regimi dittatoriali della regione nell’intento di garantirne la stabilità. La storica svolta rivoluzionerà anche i rapporti dell’Europa e della Svizzera con questi Paesi, rapporti che dovranno essere improntati alla collaborazione. L’ambasciatore Claude Wild, capo della Divisione politica IV, ha rammentato che già nel marzo scorso il Consiglio federale ha elaborato una strategia per il Nord Africa e il Medio Oriente fondata su tre pilastri, ossia democratizzazione e diritti umani, sviluppo economico, protezione e migrazione.
